bought 2 1985 interceptor 500's . tying to make one , but found both motors different size , starting with valve covers . one valve cover gasket flat and smaller and one valve cover gasket has a half round ( half puck like ) shape that fits down into head . not sure if one motor may be different year . also not sure what to do with plastic tee's on carburetor . just left open for now ?

Hi and welcome to the MadHouse:welcome:

Its unusual to arrive here with two VFR's but your approach sounds quite a plan. When you get a chance please swing by the Introductions part of the forum and say hi to the rest of the folks on here. You will quickly discover they really like to see pictures - so make sure you add a few pictures of the VFRs or it won't be too long before people start raggin on you. Don't be shy or worry if the bikes don't look their best - just take some pictures and click reply and then the "Insert Image" icon and follow the prompts to select and upload images from your computer.

    :focus:

Inevitably there is always a point in the production run when production of the old model stops and new ones start. Usually Honda aims for year end changes in spec making it easier for parts and service staff, but sometimes things fall through the gap. There are occasionally examples where a subsequent year model is actually delivered and registered before the calendar year end, or when demand is low, excess models pile up in the supply chain and are only first registered/sold after the official year of manufacture. Another thought is that as both of those bikes are approaching 30 years old, it is quite possible that someone concluded it would be easier/cheaper to fit a salvage motor from another later VFR rather than try to fix a major issue in the original motor. Either way hopefully you will have ample parts to produce at least one serviceable motorbike, and if you then end up with excess bits you don't need then you may be able to find buyers for them using the for sale section of the forum.

    Take care

Parts are hard to find, no question, but not impossible. You might need to look around a bit to find what you need. Some patience and eBay will serve you well.

    Welcome!

    found v-4 mechanic

I found a mechanic that knows these old Honda's ( 1985 ) inside and out . I asked him a few questions I had about the engine and he knew everything I was asking . so I took the bike to his shop and after hearing it he knew it was carbs . I left the bike with him and in a couple days it was running awesome . mike worked on these bikes sense they were new , and is still working on them . his shop is champion motor sport in Woonsocket R.I. . give him a try .
