I wouldn't commute on a motorcycle anywhere in the country. Hello smartphone/fakebook/instacrap/twatter!

I lane split here in TX anytime it is required. I've never been ticketed ;)

Been doin it since 84... I refuse to suck fumes sitting in stopped traffic or be the meat between to cars....especially now that rear end accidents have risen to an all time high...TEXTING. When your splitting and just going a tad faster then the gagers, and always scanning ahead. ..you can see an escape if something does arise. .
Like an asshat doing everything but paying attention. Its funny I always see riders just sitting behind cars and think maybe they just don't know what they don't know....from another State maybe.

With the exception of the older freeways in CA, if memory serves California freeways are wider than other states.

Some states allow bikes to travel in the HOV lanes.

For those who are not aware of this, lane splitting does not include riding over the double yellow or riding tandem.

Wish it was legal here in OK. Cops around here are quick to ticket for motorcycle infractions. It was my pleasure to inform two of OKC's finest that riding tandem is illegal in our great state after they did it for 7 or 8 miles down I-35.

I did it '84 when I was working at UCLA on the Olympics, had my bike air freighted from Toronto by the company I was working for. Only way to get around in LA traffic! Usually only did it when traffic was crawling or stopped, didn't trust drivers at higher speeds. Always watch drivers heads, when they looked at mirrors, I knew they were ready to do a move. Don't go on Freeways much now, but lane split at lights to get a fresh start and get ahead of cagers.

I live in South FL, its illegal here, have been ticketed once years ago when I first moved down here and did it on the free-way in bumper to bumper, if I knew what I know now, I would have just easily exited and "sed-trooper" would be no where to be found.

I do about 180 miles a week and intelligently pick where I do what I need to do. My arse is in on the line and I pick where I need to be safe and will risk a "write-up." Always watch your mirrors when your stopped.

My commute is the closest thing to autobahn riding/driving you can do. My motors sing 10,000 rpm for miles, 30 miles one way and some days I don't even dab a foot down. Its su-weet  happy safe commuting/riding

We had a bit of a win here in Sydney this year.
They made lane splitting legal at speeds bellow 30kmh, never on the side of the road or between center line and lane.
They also finally got rid of the stupid rear mud guard laws, so now we can get rid of the rear guards that uglify the rear of a sports bike.

I don't know about your part of the country but in the WA metropolitan areas, highway lanes are separated by road tits, not paint. Not sure I'd like to deal with those on one of our rare rainy days.

It was my misfortune, last week to be stuck in traffic, at a dead stop for about 20 minutes. I was in a car but if I had been on my bike I would have split the lanes. It was the only time I felt I could safely split lanes because all the traffic was stopped and there was no way a car could have cut me off. It was a pity that I was stuck in my car. I don't have a job where I commute (I roll out of bed into my office) but I do have to make weekly trips into Dallas for client meetings. I hate riding into town. They have every major highway in Dallas and the surrounding cities torn up. The roads narrow down to two lanes between concrete barriers. The roads twist, the pavement’s uneven and it is fast and dangerous. Plus, because of the construction, the road's path is constanly in flux. People just don't pay attention and it is really dangerous. The sad truth is when they finish with the construction it wouldn't be enough. It's growing pretty fast around here and I am not too wild about it.

Something is really wrong with dudes who have big tits.

More the how and why info on WSDOT tits:

    http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Design/Policy/RumbleStrips.htm

Running over or into the raised areas at any speed is a wake up call.

To compare and contrast, some of the paints and coatings use to designate roadways is not the great thing it seems. the stuff is by nature fast drying and has a high sealing factor, making it slick in many weather conditions. In some areas the paint/coating has to have an abrasive or reflective component added to the mix.
