Hi evevyone .It has been a long time. Bike has been running ok until last week.Burned the wires coming from aleternator going into the voltage regulator, again. Had to ride the bike home at 4am no headlight . Good thing for a fullmoon. The regulator only had 300 miles on it.

Pulled the alternator cover off. Plan on looking at the alternator out to inspect it for burned areas.Waiting on tool. Should there be oil inside the alt cover?

it I need a new alt and regulator what is the best options on replacements? New honda alt ,rewind, Ricky Stator or ? Best regulator?

By the way I have already added an extra positive and ground coming out of the voltage regulator.Positive has a fuse and wires are a heavier guage.

As always thank everyone in the past for helping me keep my VFR on the road, Bubba

Check with Jack Flemming at roadstercycle.com, he has complete kits for Shindengen RRs, highly recommended.

Make sure you get a mosfet reg/rec. Fh012 or fho20.
    I have a Yamaha R1 reg/rec on my vfr.
As you can see it fits in the same place.

Did you buy it from Jack Flemming at roadstercycle.com. Working on the bike now. Had two wires from stator melt the connection and touch. Pulled fly wheel. Stator winding looks a nice copper color. If im testing the stator correctly all shows to be good. Will order a new regulator soon.

    Thanks for the help

It is a sort of silly thing that Honda did, with something that generates heat and they put cooling fins on it, and then mounted it inboard so it would have no cool air flowing over it, only air coming straight off the motor, and we know how hot they can get. Seeing you need to repair the wiring, move the rec/reg outside the fairing and get some cool air to flow over it. Just because a manufacture builds something in one way, doesn't always mean it is the best way

I put small PC cpu fan on mine, just cable tied it on, i hear it every time i turn key on. Might move it to fuel pump to only activate when bikes running. Not that im having problems but thats one item I dont wanna be replacing ($$$!)

If you use a mosfet reg/rec..they dont get hot.
As for the fuel pump..it should work that way anyway. There should be a relay fitted that only allows the pump to run when the engine is turning.
The fuel pump also only supplies fuel on demand. Ie... it pumps until the carb bowls are full the senses the back pressure and stops.
My pump relay has been bypassed and I dont have any problems.
If you need a fuel pump, try a chinese rc36 one. Theyre on ebay for around £30 or 45 bucks.

Talked to Mr Flemmings and was very helpful thanks for referring him. Checked voltage today. At 4000 rpm I had 39 to 41 volts coming from the 3 stator wires.
Work nights and forgot my shop manual. Can any one tell me if this sounds correct. My voltage regulator checks out to be good using Mr Flenning's videos and stator looks good by color of windings. No shorts either. His regulator is in near future.
    Thank You

You're measuring DC volts across any 2 yellow wires while r/r is disconnected ? Healthy stator should put out voltage increasing with revs from about 8 at idle up to about 65v max @ 8000. If you ran this test earlier and it was OK,then no need to remove alt cover or rotor.

The bike had done under salt water while parked in a garage during hurricane Ike. Guess it had always bothered me that I never looked in there. Everything looked great no rust to be found.
Have replace so many parts alway feel like something else will fail.

Thanks for all the fast replies. There is so much knowledge on this site.

    Thanks

After the salt exposure, i'd expect to go through EVERY plug connector checking for and eliminating any green corrosion. Switches too.

I ordered a vintage motorcycle electrical connection repair kit and replaced almost every connection on every wire. What a chore, This bike has a lot of connections. Have replaced so many parts the bike has doubled in value. Also found a new engine in a crate that I bought. Just in case.
Squirrelman talked to you a couple years back and thank you for the carb help. Also thanks to everyone for all the information and tips on items to buy. Ready of another ride on the VFR. Bike still turns a lot of heads when they see it.

    Thanks
