LOL Ok so the title sucks...Anyway, seems my clutch on my 01 is toast. I try to accelerate, it slip and makes one heluva clicking racket. Problem is I cannot find a part number and the downloadable repair manual we have here goes to a dead link. Anyone know offhand? And can I just get away with plates or does the entire clutch need to be replaced?

Just as a WAG, if it's making clicking noise, and the clicking noise isn't coming from the chain and countershaft sprocket, you're probably going to be into it for plates and clutch basket at least. Maybe clutch output shaft.

If it was just plates slipping it wouldn't make any noise, engine rpm would increase but road speed wouldn't increase like it should. If it's clicking then the plate finger/s are shot and spinning in the clutch basket, or the inner finger/s are shot and spinning around the output shaft.

Whichever it is you need to stop running the engine immediately!! There are metal parts floating around and you could end up with some of them where they shouldn't be.

I parked the bike as soon as I heard it. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/vfr800-clutch is that the clutch plates I need? I can't find a manual anywhere to get the part numbers. I am just hoping the basket and shaft aren't too much. Would def ruin Christmas for my family this year.

If it were me I wouldn't order anything until I actually had it apart and knew the issues. No sense wasting money.

I looked at the fiche and it looks like the inner and outer clutch parts aren't awful to replace, maybe $200 for the basket and $60 for the inner. So maybe your basket is okay and the inner is shot. And you wont know whether you need both fiber and metal clutch discs until you see which ones are FUBARed.

Cross your fingers and hope for the best. Good luck and keep us posted.

Agreed. Pop the cover off first and inspect before ordering.

Well I finished my radio show and sat there mad as a bull with his balls tied up over my bike being down. SO at 11:00 at night, I began tearing down the bike. Surprisingly, the interior of the engine case looks REALLY nice. I'll get some photos tomorrow. No metal shavings to be seen, oil looked good, etc. The clutch discs were indeed worn and def need replacing. Out of all the plates, only one was discolored. I haven't checked them for their uniformity and flatness yet. So baffled, I looked on the other side. Rear sprocket is worn, I knew that. Looked at the front sprocket? Um..........it is almost completely round with little nubs. LOL How the hell does that happen? It was fine when we put the new chain on about 3 weeks ago. Both my wife and my first words were" What the f**?" So now I need to go hunt down a sprocket set as well as some clutch plates. Hoping the discs are ok.

I'm thinking chain too tight, usually pulls teeth off the rear but anything is possible

I'll send you a PM with a link to the Honda Service manual. It's a large file so I cannot email it, the link will be to a file in my Dropbox folder. Good Luck!

Just my $.02 worth, but I would also replace the chain when I put on the new sprockets. You can save the chain and use it in an emergency, but I sure wouldn't put a chain that has been through what that one has on a couple of new sprockets. A new DID 530 chain is only around $100 and would help those sprockets last longer. That chain might only be a couple weeks old, but it's had a very tough couple weeks.

Yeah, a tight chain will wear out sprockets much sooner than one that is a touch too loose.

I would install a new chain and sprockets. Ride, and then see if you need a clutch rebuild. Clutch will "usually" start slipping occasionally or popping out of gear. Not a total loss of power like that. That clicking was probably the sprocket nubs slipping over the chain rollers. How you managed to do that I have no idea, pretty impressive though

Since you have the clutch cover off and have dumped your oil, I would replace the worn clutch plates, may as well throw in new springs while you are in there. New sprockets AND chain, as others have said the chain would have had a very rough two weeks of service. You will then be good for 20K+ miles (with proper chain maintenance), great piece of mind on you next long road trip.

Gonna do that after the 1st. Can't risk screwing up my families Christmas just so I can have my bike back. Sucks not being able to ride, but family comes first. One of the few things the Army beat into my head LOL. So she will sit in the garage torn down till I get my next VA check on the 1st.
