Jake you sound very mature for your age and it seems your a good listener. ....any training course would definitely not be a waste of time...think you said you live in Cali....CHP supposedly has a good program...may be worth checking out...plus you get a brake on insurance. ...of course there a ton of training courses to choose from...good luck and
ATGATT...all the gear all the time ---- bud

Thanks, I am still a teenager so a little messing around is mandatory. I like to learn, and the next best way besides experience is listening. Maybe not so much listening in History class, but motorcycle talk is a different story.

I snapped a couple photos this morning, I was busy yesterday. I pulled the front faring and gauge cluster. Made some radiator and oil cooler brackets in about 20 min just to keep it rideable. My dad wasn't too happy I rode it without a headlight, mirrors, and blinkers. So that stuff is getting put back on until I can get blinkers at least, I can make a temporary mirror and headlight set up until I buy something that looks better. I'm thinking about mounting blinkers more in the front wheel area, maybe on the fender mount or something. I have been experimenting at school with a TIG welder so I may end up making my own radiator overflow. Oh also, I made an exhaust tip to bolt on to my collector box. The day before Turkey Day break I figured I would see if I could make use of my shop class. I wanted a 3 inch tip so I used 2(pie)r(squared) I think I came up with a little over 10 inches I added a tad bit of overlap too. I Put it through a roller then held it at 3 inches and tacked it together. Then I cut it at a 30 or 35 degree and finished welding it up. Welded a mounting tab on it and did some grinding. Took it home and painted it, I didn't use high temp clear....that was a mistake. Paint job looked good until a long ride. Started to wrinkle oh well, not to hard to repaint. I like the sound of the V4, reminds me of a small block V8.

This kid has talent and brains in abundance !! :triumphant:

I rode my first VFR ('86 700 in 1990)) for about three weeks before i dared install the lower fairings; i was that afraid of damaging them !! I might suggest the same for a newer rider, especially as the OEM 3rd gen fairings are the hardest to find.

tapping from the valve area does not point to valve clearances being out, they usually close up in service, to the point where the bike starts on 4 and immediately drops to 3 as the valve with little or no clearance holds the valve slightly open, dont ask how I know. gen 4 with 54,000 miles

Yeah its registered and insured. I rode past a motorcycle cop and I waved at him and he waved back. I thought for sure I was getting pulled over because I had no headlight, but it was my lucky day.

As for the valves, richierex I'm a little confused on what you are saying. If a cylinder is running on 3 instead of 4 valves something obviously needs to be done right?

I think I'm going to make my own radiator overflow. Do I need a breather for the expansion and contraction of the fluid? Seems to me when pressure and vacuum are introduced without a breather the overflow container is liable to have some issues?
