Value of a somewhat beat-up 1984 VF500?

Hi, so I have seen some pics of these bikes and did some reading and decided that I wanted one.

I found this one for sale near me, asking 1000


Obviously 1000 is too much, and I want to get him as low as possible, but I was looking for opinions on what price I should definitely walk at. It needs work, (look at that custom wiring) but I already have reliable transportation and want something I can wrench on. BTW I am in Florida. Not sure i'd recommend accepting his claim that a carb adjustment would cure the "idol' problem. You'd better do a compression test before buying if you want to avoid major problems later. Not stating the bike's mileage may be a warning.

 

Squirrel, I'm with you, I get sick of hearing that line "it just needs a carb tune" if it was that simple why the bloody hell would you not get it done before trying to sell it

 

Might be worth $500-$600 IMO.

 

I agree with Grey as long as the compression test doesn't spell bad news.

 

Grey is on the money as usual but $500 is the max. All the risk is on you.

 

My VF500F sold for €500 this year. It drove fine but hadn't seen a professional mechanic in over a year.

In my opinion every bike that is able to drive you home is worth at least €500. A mechanic costs €40 - €50 an hour, so if it seeds more than 10 hours of work the only value of the bike are loose parts.
