86 VFR750f dies on me in the cold

    So here's the problem: sometimes in the mornings (more often now that it's cooling down) EXACTLY the same distance into my ride to work the bike will feel like it's not getting any gas, start sputtering and eventually die. I'll pull off to the side of the road and turn the bike off. Wait 10-15 seconds and restart the bike and everything runs fine. Never had it happen a second time on a trip. Also, I've never had the issue on the drive home. Never had the issue in the summer aside from one time on a cold morning up in Michigan (I live in TN).

    It takes about 20 second from when I first feel a drop in power till the bike dies. In that window I've tried switching the petcoc to reserve, opening the choke and fully opening the throtle. None of these things worked. It's happened on different tanks of fuel from different places. I really don't think it's a fuel quality issue.

    It also makes me think this is somehow weather related because of this: I used to only warm the bike as I put on my helmet and then go. As I've been giving the bike longer warm-up times it happens less often, but anything less than ten minutes I've still had her die on me... always the same distance (about 3 miles) from home. It's just down a 55mph road so it's not like there are any sudden changes going on to make her die.

    I'm guessing maybe the fuel pump is going out? I'm just not sure (and not real sure how to test that). Thanks for any help guys

    PS I've owned the bike about 7 months and took it from 25k to 30k miles and this is the first issue.

    Long shot but fuel cap not venting properly when cold.I can't see the fuel pump only causing problems around the same distance and not causing problems on the ride home

    I'll try driving with it popped open with a rag. That should be a solid test right? Well aside from not being the safest thing in the world...

    Best if you have half full tank , if these problems had an easy fix there would be no need for this forum :peaceful:

    Could be that the fuel pump relay is acting up too. It can easily be bypassed. Just a thought.

    I had something similar happen with my 86 750. I also thought it was a fuel delivery problem till it completely crapped out. Turned out the electrical connection between the stator and the R&R was slowly disintegrating. Weird how it would almost kill the bike and then come back to life. Easy enough to check if this is the case. Remove the left hand side cover and look for three yellow wires going to a connector and see what shape its in. Mine was a hunk of melted plastic that as it got warm would separate and then come back together.

    Another reason to remove the connectors and solder and heatshrink those wires to prevent this happening, these plastic connectors are just not up to it

    There is no need to solder those wires on an 86 or 87, they are sufficiently sized.
    You need to make sure the metal connectors are not corroded and clean them up from time to time, that's all in this case.
    Soldering them together is not worth the effort

    But soldering them up isn't difficult and it just removes another potential problem point. My connector did have a slight burn mark on it and these things generally only get worse not better

    So what do you do if you have to test the R/R when you solder the wires together?

    Dookie, buggered if I know but I have no idea how many rec/regs I have done this way, mostly on older Brit bikes, and if I did have a problem and suspect the rec/reg I can unsolder it. If everything is good in the wiring department you usually won't get a failure, the shitty connectors or wires usually cause the other components to fail by shorting things out
