Ok so now pull the tank, pull the air cleaner cover, give it a squirt of Areostart or similar and see if it fires or not that will give us a bit more of an indication as to what is going on. I guess you have fuel in the tank and the tap is turned on and the pump is working?

Breath deep Andrei. Probably something simple. Great resource here and I'm sure you will be rolling soon.

I've put the key in the ignition now, lights work, indicators work, this all being on a stand, tried the horn but it doesn't work, is it because of the bike being put on the stand? i will probabbly try and get it push started today

the horn should still work, i would guess that the horn is malfunctioning or disconected

For now I would not stress over the horn not working. Let's concentrate on getting the bike running first.

So first off you seem to have jumped a step - yesterday you said you won't have time to do anything - but suddenly today you appear to be trying to start the bike again. How? You have not told us whether you managed to fully recharge the old battery or install a new one. Obviously if the battery was drained then it is not going to magically refill overnight.

It is easy to forget that we are many miles away and are relying totally on you to tell us everything which may be pertinent - don't worry about keeping your posts short - we really need a full and clear description to be able to help you.

So as you were attempting to start the bike - can we assume you managed to recharge the old battery or fit a fully charged new one?
This is really critical, as whilst some things on a bike will still cycle OK when the volts are low, lots of other stuff like the fuel pump won't prime if the battery is much below 13 volts.

When you say you turn the ignition on the lights work and indicators work ... can you confirm the following things are happening..
The dashboard lights come on and the displays go through their normal start up routine?
Is the neutral gear light illuminated?
Is the kill switch set to run?
Are the headlights on or off?
Can you hear the fuel pump priming?

Please note if the battery is not supplying enough power for the fuel pump to prime then you will NEVER be able to push start the bike! You may have been able to do that with old carburettor bikes with gravity feed - but without the fuel pump running you are wasting your time on a VFR.

just to set the record straight, it is a carbed bike. as in a 86 vfr. did those not have a vacuum operated fuel petcock. i know my 85 did and it was prone to failure

if that fails then the carbs will not receive any fuel, hence a no start situation like you have

yes it this, i kinda think the spark plugs are wet and need cleaning, since that kind of fits most of my symptoms, and keep trying to start it is going to drain down the battery, hopefully an easy fix.

Check to see if there is any spark, not hard to do.

Are you cranking this with the car battery connected? we need to know every thing you are doing. Unless you can tell us if the fuel pump is working we are only guessing

You should be able to hear the fuel pump click clear as day when you flip the key and then again when you flip the "Run" switch. The testing procedure for the pump is pretty simple too. It shouldn't require any $ or tools you don't already have.

    #1 Check for sparks

#2 Drain and refill tank with FRESH fuel

#3 drain carb float bowls into a paper towel, checking for signs of rust

#4 Bypass fuel pump relay to refill carbs

#5 try starting, but don't abuse the starter motor: it needs to cool down after just a few seconds of cranking.
