This weekend here in So Cal saw at least 3 motorcycle fatalities, this story was one of them. Since I wasn't there I have to take the story at face value I do wonder what the deal was with the Sheriffs and Border Patrol's actions. Anyone in law enforcement and/or experience with medical emergencies shed some light here?

Reminds me of when the cop arrested the fireman a few months ago, because he didn't like where the firetruck was ... during responding to an emergency. Sometimes they entirely miss the point of their job.

I work EMS. From looks of the acident it was horrible. When looking at the mechanism of injury (crash plus the 50 ft ejection) the rider had little to no chance, but considering his age.......someone on the scene should have began chest compressions until EMS arrived. Looks like the cops were way out of line to me! If the young man did not die of massive trauma. another consideration would be whats called a coup-countercoup injury. It's where your brain actually bounces around inside your skull. Not survivable. Most famous one of these type injuries was Dale Earnhardt Sr. Car looked not that bad. But the brain does not like to bounce around in the skull. Period. Massive trauma is one of the few things where the pronouncing of dead on the scene occurs. When you go to move a leather riding suit and it feels like an accordian is inside, its pretty obvious.
I came rolling into work on the VFR just the other day. My partner says, "We just ran a wreck last shift and that bike looked just like yours!!!!!!!!!" Squid with shorts and tennis shoes. He would have probably got to limp off if he would have had on some boots and no road rash if he would have had a jacket. I gave him the ATGATT speech in the ER.

I will say honestly that some scenes go without a glitch, and others are a cluster *#$# from second one. Looks like this falls to the later category.
I would recommend every rider take a basic first aid /CPR class. A LOT of people are saved or at least kept to the point where we can save them by bystanders before we get there. A lot of us prefer riding in mountains or remote places. I do! Help can be a LONG way away.
On average, a 911 call takes 5-7 minutes before my little radio goes BEEP BEEP to tell me you need help. Then I got 2 minutes to get the wheels rolling. Coming up on 10 minutes. Then however long it takes to get there. We have a max of 8 minutes as a goal. Can be longer if its raining, foggy, traffic is screwed etc. You get the picture.

Well before this incident I considered taking a CPR/First Aid course but work/life got in the way but considering how much time I/we spend riding these back roads, it looks like I'll have to make time to do it! Thanks for the input

    That is really bad.

We used to get the call to roll before the original call taker was off the phone. In most cases, it was 2 or 3 minutes max before we were rolling. But consider that I was on the road rolling about 95% of the time I recieved a 911 call so some time is saved there.

Our 911 center had the original call taker who input data into the system which would alert the dispatchers of the area in question who would immediately dispatch the call. Also the complaint taker and dispatcher were within ear shot of each other too.

But this was for police calls. The original complaint taker would answer: "991 Emergency. Do you need police, fire or ambulance?" 911 center was in the police office so police calls were immediately dispatched. Calls for ambulance or fire would be send immediately and directly to Ambulance or Fire Dispatch while our 911 operators remained on line and listened to insure call was received and there was no need for other agencies to attend. So I guess that took some time but should only been a few moments not 8 minutes. Calls for Fire and Ambulance were not slowed significantly at 911 center because they took no time to collect data.

Things have changed a LOT! We think it is ridiculous as well. But considering the amount of complete BS that comes through the system these days.....I'm sure you guys weren't used for taxi service. We are. The amount of calls has increased exponentially and we get paid less and we make calls in the field that only doctors make in the hospital. It's only going to get worse. Wait till you have chest pain and a medic shows up. He takes an IPad and sticks it in your face and you video chat with an MD. Then they decide whether we leave or treat you. That's where it's going. Good Luck in the future!

Also when considering we work with the "Golden Hour"...It really bothers me to be 7-10 minutes behind the 8 ball as well! Now with Ebola the first question you answer is " Have you been in contact with anyone that has been to West Africa in the past 21 days? Where does it go from there. Have you been to Wal Mart? Have you flown, ridden a bus, subway? Tick tock. Delay of PT care.......I will PM you my private email if you are appalled by what you have read and I can tell you how bad it really is.

I know it was not as prevalent down there as here in Canada back in 2003 or so but we dealt with the S.A.R.S. pandemic here. I was quarantined because of close contact with a suspected case. Ya. I hear you with the BS you guys have to put up with and I was not being critical of you or your profession. It is just that 8 - 10 minutes before you receive information that your expertise is needed in an emergency situation, seems to be awfully long.

I also hear you about the questions about Ebola. I also went on the AIDS protocol because of open wound to open wound I suffered during a fisticuffs with a hype. Fortunate for me, I tolerated that cocktail of drugs well. I hear it can rather nasty.

Wished I could see what the original blog was about. Seems there is criticism towards actions taken by Border Services and local Leos. I guess with, according to 2007 stats, there are over 460,000 law enforcement officers, and 21,000 CBP agents in the USA, you are going to have some that do not measure up, or plain make mistakes like the rest of us.

I was just trying to be honest. Some calls we do get a minute or two later and we are rolling just like you said. We have new dispatchers constantly. It was nice when you knew everybody and it happened quick! Now we all have flow charts and protocols that seem to impede progress on legitimate calls. It sucks that the frequent fliers know the right words to say to get us there quick, and the true emergencies get caught up in the flow charts and protocols and it burns time. Sorry for the soapbox. It's really frustrating these days.
My only goal is to get some riders to take some first aid courses. They may save their friends life with a little bleeding control, shock control, and first aid on scene. The BS and remote locations could make help a half hour or more away. State Police took 3 hrs to show up to an accident my friend had yesterday !

3 hours! Why did they even go? There are times when calls for service will not be attended to in the police world. I have refused to go to a few calls based on priorities I had to make and the nature of the call. But I was prepared to answer for my decisions. I understand that EMTs may not be able to do that, but we were. A few of my favorites were when people who live on the edge of civilization phone in to say there is a bear or cougar 100 yards up in the bush. Well fuck lady, go in the house and close the door! A bit more to it than that but you get the picture. Or you tell them you are going to come and shoot the bear and they get all in a dither about that.

I miss most of what I used to do for a living but there is some that I do not. Makes for good stories, laughs and sometimes tears too.

So heres a link to to the new CPR. It can be only chest compressions now you do not have to give two breaths unless you have a barrier protector for the breaths. The thought process for no breaths is that with the compressions you are getting a little bit of air flow every time you compress. Also it was researched that people wouldnt start CPR because of the breaths. So something is better than nothing. Its now 100 per min for single person. Oh and dont "straddle" the victim like in this video. (I picked this video for entertainment purposes but you'll get the message)
