Hi, been here a while but have never posted.

Yesterday, I parked my 2002 to do new tires and both CCTs. The bike is my daily driver and never has hiccuped once starting or anything (~65k mile bike). I pulled the fairings and following the procedure in the manual and the recommended posts, replaced the rear CCT, gasket, and washer. This happened with no incident, however, when I tried to start the bike right after, no dice. Battery is good, all systems appear normal, FI light turns on and turns off as fuel priming is audible when kill switch is disengaged. The starter switch turns the motor strongly and it fires weakly but will not engage to a running state.

Thinking back to when I did the CCT, when I inserted the new one, the arm did not extend right away and the key just fell out the end when I tightened the unit to the head. But when I pulled it to check after it did not start, the arm was extended and I used the tool to retract the arm. The CCT looks fine and seems to be functioning as intended. Replacing the old one did not make the bike run. No strange sounds can be heard upon cranking the bike.

Is it possible that I messed up the cam chain or valves in any way? I am at a loss here. I am thinking of pulling the valve cover and inspecting the chain, but I thought I would appeal to you fine folks for any and all input.

    Please and thank you.

    -J

I am not sure about the rest, but it seems to me that if the valves or chain were jacked, it wouldn't turn over. Have you checked to see if you have fuel pressure? All vacuuum lines are good and all electrical connections are good?

It is possible (and sounds like) she has jumped a tooth on the cam sprocket and now the timing is off. Better check before any further cranking is attempted.

A tooth off on any of the cams will not really create a problem. You most likely didn't plug something back in or all the way in. Are you getting fuel pressure? Kill sw off? Check the simple things first.

The thing is, I didn't unplug anything at all. I only got as far as the rear tensioner. Kill switch is good and so is side switch but I will methodically check the electricals and hoses and fuel pressure and report back. Thanks

I am inspecting the engine timing.

Can someone clarify what the "index marks" are? Are they the "F|" marks on the cam sprockets? The PDF manual isn't high res enough for me to read the photos.

Nevermind, I got it figured out. The index marks correspond to the cam on which they are on. FI front intake, FE front exhaust, RI rear intake, RE. The manual is not super clear on this.

Diagnosis is that when I installed the CCT, the arm did not extend right away and the chain jumped on the crank side. The cams are still synced with each other, but they are not timed with TDC on #3. A precautionary tale of CCT DIY.
