A guy has a set of 1985 VFR 500 mufflers for sale, very good condition, my question is, will they fit the 1983 750 VFR pipes?

I used to own a VF500 and I believe I remember this same question being asked some time ago and I from what I recall, the answer was no. Hopefully somebody else can chime in who can confirm.

on my 84 when I bought it I thought it had the original cans on it,
but when I switched to my Yoshi system I checked the part numbers
and it turns out they were from an 84 500. I had no problems Taking
them off and I checked the pipes and nothing looked modified so my
assumption is that they fit. The 500 parts were just the cans not the rest
    of the exhaust.

Maybe the easiest way to figure this out is to find a site that has an online parts finder, look up the exhaust for each bike and compare the model numbers. That will give you the answer you're looking for.

Ask someone with a 500 to measure the "O.D.", as the part numbers between the 750 & 1000 are probably different as well, but those do fit.

Post a picture indicating exactly where you want it measured and I will post those measurements.

The OD of the pipe right before where the muffler clamps on is 1.704 inches on my 1986 VF500F.

    Hope that helps.
