First ever trackday!!

Just done my first ever trackday after taking up bikes again after 35 years away. Went to Oulton Park http://nolimitstrackdays.com/uk-tracks/oulton-park.html in the UK. Last time i was here i saw Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts! To say i enjoyed is is a huge understatement. Am booking again to go to Rockingham circuit next week.
Could do with some tips on bike preparation, found my brakes were fading a bit so can anyone recommend some decent pads suitable for trackdays.
On another note prior to riding we had to do a noise test, to my surprise she failed it. Am using a Delkovic can and was 1db over the limit. A quick trip to the Race Shop for some muffler material!!! Took the baffle out, stuffed some down the can, baffle back in resulted in a drop of 10db. Bike sounded crap but at least i could continue. On track she would struggle to pull 10500rpm but i was enjoying myself. After about five laps there was a huge bang and it felt like i had a Nos switch!! Bike went like a bat out of hell easily redlining through the gears. What happened was the baffle screw fell out and blew the baffle and material out the back. Next time i go am gonna muffle up for the noise test and then take it out!

Anyway well meaning tips on my riding style gratefully recieved LOL. Bear in mind only been riding 3 months after a gap of 35 years. My bike is a 2000 5th gen. btw am running nearly new Pirelli Angel GTs. Very impressed.

Looked like fun. They don't make you tape up brake lights at that track?

 

It was my mate on a Yamaha Wildcat. Best bit was chasing that big Ducati down. Guy was quite pissed off he got taken by a mere VFR!

 

Congrats on your TD. I started (TDs) in the mid-50s as well, and must warn you that they are addictive as hell :biggrin1:. Can't say I would've appreciated muffler packing being blown out at me had I been behind you, but I realize you hadn't planned for that to happen :wink:. My last TD, the guy behind me threw his bike at me & knocked me off track, don't care much for parts, pieces, people, getting tossed around on the track ... enjoy your next one ...

Stand up job lad, stand up job! Your vid was fun to watch....I did think it was gonna sprinkle on you a tad though...or does jolly ole England always look overcast like so? Makes me wanna get out on the track!

 

England is as you think it is! Weather so unpredictable, needs loads of planning although for October its been really mild so am gonna get plenty of bike riding in. Roll on Sunday on the Welsh roads!!!!

 

On your brakes: When was the last time you changed your brake fluid? That might do more than pads to increase your feel. Since it is more of a pain to bleed the linked brakes, it may not have been done for awhile. stainless reinforced brakelines will help with feel too. Buy a set of extra pads to bring with you to the track - as well as spares of other things likely to bend/brake that won't likely be available at the track such as extra levers. If you bring a bike pump, or air pump, you can play with tire pressure changes. If you fall and your helmet smacks, you may want a spare lid as a back-up as well.

That said, I've not ridden my VFR on the track, but ride an 89 Hawk (Bros for the UK) as my 6th gen has commuter duties. due to the massive 45 hp she makes, it is great fun to pass bikes around the outside, out break them, and generally enjoy piloting the oldest, lowest powered machine in the paddock past folk.
