The 2012 VFR1200 owners manual says "Tank capacity: 5.02 gallons".

After riding my bike for 2500 miles and seeing how much I could get in at refills, it sure didn't seem like it holds that much to me. So I decided to take advantage of my new extra gas container and test it.

Link to how I added more gas capacity

So I put exactly one gallon in my spare container, and started riding.
My fuel warning came on and said I had 25 miles left. Within 2/10th mile it said 26.
It proceed to count down to 12, or maybe 11.8 ish, and then it changed to just ---- dashes.
From the point when the mileage indicator warning came on, I got 35.2 miles before the bike stalled.
From the point when the display went to dashes, it was 14.3 miles when it stalled.

I then put in the exact one gallon I had put in my spare can, and drove 2.8 miles to a gas station.

Assume I burnt 1/10 of a gallon getting to gas station.

After adding 3 gals, which would have been about 1 gal + 3gal - 1/10 gal, I had 3.9 gallons in that tank, and the fuel was at least 1/8 inch over the "filler neck plate".

Honda states in the manual "Do not fill with fuel above the filler neck plate". If I adhered to that, it would say you can only get a usable 3.9 gallons in this bike.
(Usable only if you carry a spare gas can and are willing to run the tank to truly empty!)

But I kept adding gas, which became very difficult, as the gas pump nozzle auto-shotoff was fighting me, so I was clicking the nozzle over and over and getting in about 1/20th of a gallon each time. Finally I was able to get the tank full all the way to where the gas was all the way up to the bottom edge of the tank filler flange at the edge facing the front. At that point I had managed to force in 3.919 gallons.
Call it 3.92, plus my 1 gallon minus the 1/10 I used to get to the gas station. That says from empty defined as when the bike stalls doing 35 mph on a dead level road, the tank hold 4.82 gallons if you ignore the Honda statement not to fill above the neck plate.

The manual says you have .8 gallons left when the warning count down turns on, I got 35.2 miles from that point. It also says when the level gets down to .3 gallons, the display switches from miles to go to the ----- dashes, I got 14.3 miles from that point.

All of this makes my happy I did my extra tank hack.

The difference between the stated capacity and the actual capacity is beause of the fuel pump, fuel lines, etc.

Saying it has a " "Tank capacity: 5.02 gallons" but then telling you should only fill it to 4 gallons is BS where I come from. The manual and marketing material should say " "Usable Tank capacity: 4 gallons", otherwise it is totally misleading. Given that sane people try not to get lower than 1/2 gallon left before a refill, this difference of 1 gallon is quite substantial. The practical difference between 3.5 and 4.5 says that the tank has 28% less capacity then advertised. I love Honda and I love the bike, but shame on them.
