Its not always recommended to run full synthetic oil in a motor with High Mileage. You may get lucky and not have any problems, or you may run into problems like me and get some oil leaks.

I was told a heavier weight oil is good for the older bikes to keep the oil pressure up.
    15w50 or 20w50

    Thanks,

I have had the concern about the leaks...

Synthetic is great to use from the start but switching in a high mileage usually does just that due to the properties of the oil...

I like a full synthetic due to the fact your oil temps are 20-30 deg cooler and they dont usually break down nearly as fast...

But that being said, I have also considered the valvoline convention motorcycle oil...

Does anyone have any opinion on that particular oil? Valvoline is a great oil and I use there "not street legal" full sythetic in all the cars i build because of all the zinc...

Pretty much anything valvoline makes is great so i cant see why that would be any different

Squirrel and Toe together at last

I hate to sound like Squirrel but at the age of the bike oil leaks are the least of your worries, good oil is whats needed and do not give a second thought.

My 2 cents if its worth that is that I would go synth blend 20w 50. And asap find an oiling kit for the cams.

Where might i find one of those? I either just cant find parts for these bikes or im typing the wrong thing in google/ebay...

And does anyone know the capacity?

I'll check at work, im not sure if we carry a 20-50 sythetic blend or not... I'll probably just go full on sythetic... We just started carrying mobile 1 20-50 for vtwins... Idk why it is vtwin specific but i dont see why i couldnt use it...

You don't need 50w oil or an oiling kit. The oiling kit is a faux once you know what the real problems is http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/v4_cams_what.html

Get a good 10w-40 oil either syn or if available in your area Golden Spectro, your trans will love it and shift a lot better. My original cams, 67k VF750F loved it.

Personally, I'd love to see an 84 vfr.
Seriously, use an oil that honda recommend.

Rotella T6 Synthetic 5w-40. Get it at walmart for $21/Gallon. I was going to run Golden Spectro but it's no where to be found around here. Amsoil is supposed to be the best but its big $$$. I decided to put the Rotella T6 in my '84 VF700F after reading all kinds of goodness about it. It's only been in there a few miles and I've only put a few miles on the bike since I've owned it so I can't tell you how it shifts vs. other stuff. It did quiet down the valve tick. The cam has minor pitting on one lobe so in 500 or so miles I'm going to check it and see what it looks like. I'm hoping this oil will be magical and stop the cam wear dead in its tracks...lol.

I decided to put the Rotella in my 1977 KZ1000 and I have noticed its shifting better and the gearbox is quieter too. I had been running Castrol 4T 10w-40 in the KZ until last weekend. It was in there exactly a year to the day with only 930 miles and seemed to have thinned out quite a bit already. I dunno....didn't give me a happy feeling.

I have a '88 VFR that consumes oil. The curent oil is Castrol 10W 40 , the question is if it wold help to change to a heavier weight oil. I did aproximatly 3500 km and it consumed 2l of oil.
