Somehow the left foot peg mounting bracket/ heat guard on my 2000 is cracked and needs to be replaced pretty soon. If I'm seeing things right, I'll have to remove the swing arm pivot bolt to get this done. It seems like things could go very bad if I don't do this properly. Do I need to suspend the swing arm or suspension somehow? What will keep the whole thing from falling once the bolt is removed? Any help would be appreciated.
Use another long bolt or rod from the right side to drive out the swingarm mounting bolt, that will hold the swingarm while you pop on a new bracket, reverse the procedure and you're done. BTW, the bolt is just over 3/4" so a 3/8" or maybe 1/2" sched. 80 PVC pipe about 2' long should work nicely, or whatever solid rod you have available.
Got It done this weekend! Used a concrete stake to push the bolt out and make sure everything stayed in place. Used some steel wool to buff out some rust on the bolt. Greased it up and it slipped right in without a hitch. One other note, at the front of each foot peg bracket is an Allan head bolt. 5mm I think. These bolts do not attach the brackets to the engine. Rather, the bolt threads into the engine case then the foot peg simply fits over the bolt head. I thnk they called it a locator bolt. These bolts do not have to be removed to take off the peg bracket. Fortunately I didn't try to loosen that bolt until after I loosened the pivot bolt. Vroom vroom!
