Hello. My 1998 Vfr is doing something funny. While I'm accelerating my lights are normal, but as soon as I leave the throttle the headlights and dashboard lights go brighter. Is this normal?

No, not normal. For some reason the regulator section of you R/R is not doing it's job, output voltage should remain fairly constant. Check all connectors for corrosion, clean and burnish contacts if they look powdery. Take some voltage readings at various RPMs.

Sounds like it is heading for a meltdown, check the connectors on the rec/reg for any signs of burning, melting

It's normal that the voltage rises slightly around idle speed, 0.2 - 0.3V. Did so on mine 5.th gen with old r/r, also does so with new r/r ;)

So. I finally checked my charging system. Tested while bike was cold and again after a good long drive. At idle I'm charging at 13V and at 4000+ rpms 13.9v-14v, so the r/r is clearly not the problem. Had my battery load tested, and tested bad. Replaced the battery and its now 100%

Makes no sense that shutting the throttle makes the lights go brighter, unless it is the fact the ignition starts to draw less as the revs drop but for the battery to be that low I would have thought you would have had starting problems, but anyway glad it is sorted
