So I'm going to spray my pillion footrest brackets black, and I would like to replace the clips. Any ideas what they're called?

perfect, thanks for that. I actually think I'm after the split pin. (part 29) rather than the rod (pin #31).
I've bookmarked partzilla for future reference. what a great site.

The split pin is more commonly known as a "cotter key". At least around here.

    Cotter pin may refer to:

    In U.S. usage:
Split pin, a metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation used to fasten metal together, like with a staple or rivet
Hairpin cotter pin, more commonly known as an "R-clip"
Bowtie cotter pin, a vibration-proof type of R-clip that is shaped like a bowtie
Circle cotter, a ring-shaped cotter pin

    In British usage:
Cotter (pin), in mechanical engineering a pin or wedge passing through a hole to fix parts tightly together

This usage difference is often a cause of confusion when companies of both countries work together.

In yet another strange turn of events we find the Cotter Pin was invented by a dude in St Louis, Mo.

God only knows what language those dudes from down under are speaking.

A split pin is also a term used in women's mud wrestling soon to be an Olympic event and aboot time IMO.
