My wife and I started training yesterday for the Carlsbad half-marathon! This year it happens to fall on my birthday (January 18th -- feel free to send presents) and I thought doing something like this would be a great way to celebrate. I also thought, the more people I tell, the more motivation I'll have to stick with the training over the next 19 weeks. So, I'm telling all my VFR brethren. I'll be holding myself accountable but I appreciate any encouragement and support you guys send our way.

I've run this far before but it's been over five years since I've run with any type of consistency and certainly not the kind of mileage I'll eventually be putting in. A lot has changed in five years! I'll be 47 on race day. I've got a good training schedule mapped all the way out to race day with a nice taper towards the end. The trick is to stay healthy and avoid injuries. And, the hardest part for me, making time to get the runs in. Work is ramping up and I am NOT a morning person. That might have to change. I'm really proud of my wife for doing this too. She's never run any kind of race. Our goal: finish. Simple as that.

Anyone else want to post up your workouts here, that would be cool too. Whether it's running, lifting, jiu-jitsu, whatever. Reading about everyone else's work outs and any progress you want to share would be cool and would benefit all of us. I know there are some of you who have said you want to lose some weight or there are some of you who are already in shape who can serve as motivation for the rest of us. Let's do this together. Here's my first and I'll be back after today's run:

    09.08.14: 2 mile run

I've run 5 K's, 10 K's, and a few 7.7 mile runs, but never a half-marathon, just too far for me. Give 'er hell.

I think the hardest part will be keeping the early training slow enough, and not giving in to the urge to rush it. You know: "I've done this before, I'll just up the pace a little."

My niece is in training for a full marathon, but she is constantly having ankle and knee problems so I don't know how it's going to work out for her. I think her problem is she rushes it too much.

I've mostly dropped down to the more non-stressful cycling and stationary rowing. I belong to an online rowing club and that keeps me going when I have trouble staying motivated. I don't know if you're a Facebook user, but sometimes interacting with some like-minded folks can get you out there when you might feel like taking an unnecessary break.

Good luck, and let's hear how it turns out.

Thanks FJ! The plan is definitely to take it slow. I took a 16-week training program and added the 3 additional weeks I have to the beginning at an even lower mileage. Hopefully, that goes far in easing me into it. Plus, I know that a day off here and there isn't fatal. I'll listen to my body and having been in really good shape in my earlier years, I think I know the difference between soreness and injury. I'm not on Facebook but maybe I'll find some like minded people on VFRW!

    09.09.14: 2 mile run.

Just send me some naked pictures of your wife working out.

(I'm using the anger method of motivation for you. You can thank me later).

Funny. I wouldn't mind showing her off except for the fact that my life would end soon thereafter!

That's perfectly acceptable. Given, of course, that you're pushing your bike. While it's in gear. Up hill. Barefoot. That hub cap of yours is optional.

Done! Great run along the waterfront. The bay was to our right with the downtown skyline straight ahead. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all those who lost their lives in NYC and Arlington both in the air and on the ground, 13 years ago today and in the days and months that followed. And my deepest gratitude to all the first responders and citizens who risked and sacrificed their lives in an effort to save others.

    09.11.2014: 2 miles.

Nice! What did your adventure race consist of? I have images of running through jungles and wrestling wild boar and anacondas while natives shoot poison-tipped darts at you out of blow guns.

Congratulations! I'm running in my first half marathon this Sunday 9/14. Its the first annual Queens half marathon. They're holding it at Corona Park where they had the 1964 world's fair. (I call it the Men In Black park because it's the park where they have the final showdown with the alien in the movie Men in Black) I attached a pic of the 16 week training program I did and a pic of my longest run. It was definitely hard but I'm glad I stuck with it. I've lost about 13lbs since the end of May and I eat more than I ever have in my life. I'm seriously always hungry now.

It was tough sometimes to find the motivation to get out and run but I found some podcasts I really enjoy listening to and I told everyone I know that I signed up for a half marathon so I wouldn't bitch out. I initially was having trouble with my knees when I started increasing the distance but I incorporated some lower body weight training in to my routine. Specifically my quadriceps. That took care of the knee pain I was experiencing.

Initially my goal was to just finish but the training has given me the confidence I was lacking so now my goal is to finish in 2h15m. Signing up for a half marathon was probably the best thing I've done for myself this year. After I accomplish my goal on Sunday I'm going to sign up for a Spartan Race for early next year. So looks like I'm going to have to get into weight training.

It sounds like from your earlier posts that your not a stranger to running. But a few things that I found helpful along the way were spotify for music, LOTS of podcasts or audio books, good running shoes (I went with the Adidas Climachill rocket boost [I know its a silly name but great running shoes]), body glide for chafing, and the Map My Run app on my iPhone.

Good luck to you and your wife! And keep us posted
