    Hey VFRers,

I just went to check out my dream bike, and looked at the tires closely....Front 0211, back 1610.

Just wanted to check to see what the tires born on date was. It's the 4 digits inside the oval...correct?
First two are the weeks in the year and the last two the year...Correct??

They didn't look bad, but you could tell they were worn..they were Michelin sports Pilots...not 100% on that one, but they were Michelin.

    Good or bad, or MEH.

    What think ye?

    Cheers,

    Bill

Check Michelin website, they have lots faq's about their tires if your unsure.

If this dream bike is something your going to purchase, try negotiating for new tires. Or the seller reduce the price by the amount of a new set of tires. If its your bike just put on a new set & be done with it.

That is correct. Two digit week in the year followed by two digit year. I recently checked mine after doing a little research and realized I was riding on eight year old rubber! The original owner had purchased the bike and let it sit for years before I bought it. Here's a good article that answers your question and talks in more detail about motorcycle tires: http://holdingitbig.com/blog/2012/01/18/motorcycle-tires-what-you-may-not-know/

If your dream bike was consistently ridden, there's a better chance that the tires are in "better" shape than if they've just been sitting (and rotting). Either way, you're approaching five years on the rear and four years on the front. I'd be looking to replace them soon. Maybe use that to get a reduction in the price being asked. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't want to be riding on rubber that old.

Good luck. Let us know if you get the bike. And, of course, if so, post pics!

Pretty much what MG said. Use this knowledge to leverage a better deal, if it is at a dealer, see if they'll throw on a new set of tires for you.

Buy the bike and get new tires of your choosing... No fuss no muss. All done dream bike in hand.
Change the oil and filter immediately too.

Basically buy it and have yourself a six pack filled maintenance weekend. Tidy it all up get to know your new wheels and move on. You will feel much better about it.
