Hey everyone! Just bought an '85 VFR750F. It wasn't running when I picked it up. Carbs were off and came in a box, no battery, etc. etc... Poked it all back together and runs great. There's 38K (Km) on it. Just been finding it a pain in the a** to find info on it. For everything I've looked up so far, it seems to run '83, '84, '86... in ther parts listings. Is there one of the two years before or after '85 that I might be safe going with, part number wise? And is there anywhere in particular I can look up info easier/quicker either on this site or elsewhere?

Paid $600 for the bike... did I get a deal or taken? Just have to play with the carbs now to get the spring back in the throttle and likely replace the throttle handle control because there's play in the plastic clip(it's elongated) where the lower cable clips. I put plugs in it and it idles smooth at about a grand.

Thanks and don't hesitate to correct me on terms and such... I'm the new guy :confused-new: and just looking to learn.:noidea:

You can get an on line FSM here: http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/31510-1st-2nd-Gen-Service-manual-Download-links

The only parts that are interchangeable are 83, 84, 85 VF750/700F bikes. Then there are some minor differences between 83 and the others. Some diff between 750-700 mechanical parts.

Most on line part houses have parts from Honda warehouse ex:http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/#/l/hon/5053eb48f870021c54be4068/1984-vf750f-a-parts Though some parts are discontinued. Then you go to ebay and or salvage yards.

The throttle tube does have an elongated hole on one side. Adjust at both or top cable ends for slack/tightness. Don't forget to RTFM to do things correctly. Nice to see another old one coming back to life. Just ask here and you should get a response. Good luck.

Welcome. Post some pictures before you get razzed!

With a bike of that vintage, go through and check all electrical connectors, pull apart and check for corrosion, clean contacts, do not put "dialectric grease" on contacts. This should ward off typical electrical gremlins we all suffer sooner or later.

Sure. There was no '85 VFR750F, didn't come out until 86. You have a VF750F. Completely different bike with a completely different engine

If it's an 85 then it's not a VFR. It's a VF750F (1st Gen). In 86 was the first "VFR" calling and 2nd gen "Interceptor".

    Welcome aboard neufi!

In addition to the above, I'd take a close look at the cams. Cam wear, and the previously mentioned electrical gremlins, are probably the 2 main issues with those bikes (some are known for trans probs as well).

Anyway, those 1st gen bikes are what started the whole race track inspired sport bike craze imo (those, and maybe the Yamaha RZ 350s). Man, did I want one of those VFs back in the day.

And ya, you might want to post some pics before we become unpleasant...

welcome neufi the bike looks good, you should enjoy riding it once you get it back on the street.
Lot's of good info on this site and some very good people willing to help you. ( of course we also butt
heads here to) You can try Honda Canada for some parts if you can find a decent parts guy, They still
carry some OEM parts and it usually doesn't take long to get them ( I think the warehouse is in B.C.).
I would also go thru everything that was said above to make sure your ride is a safe one. AND MORE
    PICTURES!
