Can someone tell me how many wires you are suppose to connect the left turn signal to and what color they are suppose to be and how many wires you are suppose to connect to the right turn signal and what color they are suppose to be. If I order after market parts I want to make sure they have the same amount of wires. Is one or both suppose to have a grounded wire. The same with rear signals - color and how many wires. The issue that I am having is that when I bought the bike it didn't have any turn signals. I bought some off ebay, turn signals for a 83 VF750F and had someone put them on. Someone then observed and pointed out that I actually have rear turn signals on the front and the person I hired to put them on did some fancy wiring. As I have seen on a lot of old interceptors riding around, the plastic thing holding the signal in place and sturdy separate and that is what has happened on the right rear and no matter how many times I push the one male part into the female part it still pops out - crazy glue didn't work. So now I want to take the good turn signals (rear) off the front and put them on the rear and buy some new front signals. I would really appreciate any information.
Can't speak for the 83, but from my experience with Honda's of a similar vintage the front turn signals have 3 wires and the rear is just 2. The reason being is that the fronts use a 2 filament light bulb. One wire is a constant 12v for the low wattage filament which produces a very dim light for night time driving, the other wire is from your turn signal relay and provides 12v to the the brighter flash filament. 3rd wire is ground (which is typically green). When you hit the turn signal switch it cuts off the constant 12v to the low watt filament. The rears don't stay constantly lit so it's a simple 2 wire, power and ground with power coming for the flash. Most aftermarket turn signals are 2 wires, which are fine for the rears, but using them on the front requires some extra wiring voodoo if you want to keep the constant on/flash capabilities. This can be accomplished either with rectifier diodes, or an extra bosch style relay for each front light. I've posted this before, since I bought some aftermarket fronts from cycle gear that actually use a pretty powerful mini halogen I decided to go the relay route.
Will start with the rear first. As sitting on the bike: Right-Light blue (power) and green (grd), Left Orange, green. Front- Right turn=Light Blue w/brown leader, green=grd and Running light=Light Blue w/white leader .
