what are the must do mods?

    i'm new to the vfr800 vtec and loving the bike. what are the must do mods that you fine people are doing?
    ive just bought a set of helibars and a double bubble screen as i'm 5,11 and find that i got to tilt my head right the way back and causing pain when i ride. hence the bar raisers and the screen just to throw the wind over my shoulders.

    so what are the other mods people are doing?
    i've heared of a sargent seat. not sure what the difference is between the standard seat (that i find is ok) and the sargent one.

    The Sargent seat is flatter with less of a downward angle. With the Sargent you tend not to slide forward towards the tank as much. Plus IMO the sergeant is a little firmer. The Sargent also has a little more padding for the passenger as well.

    Suspension, suspension, suspension. Then anything else you want. Exhaust, bars, stickers whatever floats your boat.

    Oh yeah...+1 to the Sargent seat. That one ASAP.

    Real quick like, you can change to non OEM tires as a well.

    Both are inexpensive before you get into the expensive suspension, exhaust etc.

    Also, free "mods" for comfort include adjusting the front brake lever and rear brake pedal.

    If you move the air so it goes over your shoulders you no longer get a lift from the air catching you on the chest. Then all the weight is on your wrists, arms. I'd put a shorter windshield on my bike if I could find one to try out.

    my wrists and back is fine the problem i get is in my neck from tilting my head so far back. i'm adding the double bubble because i' putting the bar risers on.

    I can only speak for myself - an Ohlins shock ($1300) and resprung/revalved fork ($550), but I know others have made much cheaper/effective mods.

    Yeah, the Ohlins shock was one of the best upgrades I've done. Even the pillion noticed the difference the very first ride.

    These things are not just heavy, the weight is quite high up and they can adopt horizontal parking mode with little or no warning as this ongoing thread demonstrates...

    Especially for smaller and lighter riders, if the bike starts to tip over you will struggle to stop it once it starts to really lean over, at which point your focus should be on getting out the way and avoiding being trapped below the bike, rather than trying to fight it as it is going down. So to minimise the financial pain and hurt pride, you may want to invest in fitting a R&G frame and bar end slider kit. Its also worth freeing off the mirror pivot bolt (where it rotates by mounting stem nb the allen bolt may still be hidden under a plastic cap which you need to remove). Then retighten it just enough so it stays put when riding but is loose enough to swing around without snapping off if, or should I say when, you eventually drop the bike, and gain entry to Randy's hall of fame.

    Don't assume the suspension will be set up correctly for you. Chances are it won't. For an hours labour staff at a Honda dealer will help get the basics adjusted right - you cant do it properly on your own. But ideally, I suggest you locate and talk to people at your nearest circuit running motorbike track-days to see if when they have a suspension specialist attending the circuit. Quite often the specialist will be based in a trailer located outside the circuit, so you don't need to pay to enter the event to have them look at the bike and help you get the bike set up for you and your style of riding. They will let you know if they spot any issues which you need to fix (tyre damage) and the chances are, they may suggest upgrades - but its well worth first seeing what the standard kit can deliver when it is properly tuned for you, before changing things.

    For me, a "low-end" Penske rear shock (~650), Racetech .95 front springs (maybe 125 + install, fluid, etc.), and proper set up did the trick. The stock front springs are ridiculously 'soft' and I'm only 5'8" & 160. I have to say, and just my opinion skimad4x4, the 'standard kit' with respect to suspension is, in a word, crap :nod: ...

    IMHO, the first thing you need to do is upgrade the charging system. Two VFR's now and two times I've had problems. I would get an upgraded MOSFET R/R and a VFRness at the very least.

    After that, suspension, then seat. Helibars and lower footpegs probably won't be necessary at your height (not poking fun at you).

    cheers for the insight into the mods. as i said its going to be a while before i play with the suspension as ive only just go to bike last week and i find the handling alot nicer than my old lump of a bandit. i've had the bike all the way over today no chick strips left and thats whith crappy conti motion tyres. i've got crash bungs. my helibars have turned uo yesterday and ive ordered the double bubble screen. got a busy weekend fitting things. i got to take the fairiing off to sort out a tempory fix i did to an electrcial prob ive got and will take a look at the RR

    Take it a step at a time. If you have done all that has been suggested so far, your bike will now weigh more than a Harley.

    I like things like those chrome grips with the fringes to match the everpopular assless chaps. Not on mine of course but to each his own I always say. ;)
