Yo guys and gals. Figured I'd share my solution to the toll dilemma on the bike since I didn't find anything already on here. So I'm in PA and didn't want my nice clean looking 07 tarnished by the hideous PA DOT transponder. Installed it inside my left saddlebag on the top, at a spot that roughly matched the angle of my windshield. Works like a charm so far. Now hopefully I won't get charged for all the times I went through and it didn't work
I run mine inside my tail bag, lost one once oot of my Aerostich pocket :frusty: I musta cursed the entire ride home! Called it in stolen, toll by plate they charge you more for, least down here in FL. Back in the day in NJ, I used to run every toll booth, this was in the 90s before cameras were the norm, I only paid at the tunnels/bridges. They should really give bikes a break, in the HOV lanes we ride for free. I leave the transponder home then, when I know I am gona ride in the car-pool lanes. Cheers and happy riding.
We used go be able to beat those cameras here by riding right on the line. Camera would not take the shot. I suppose they had them calibrated so as not to have two cameras take the shot. But now they have fixed that. Of course it would not work if you had a transponder. I put mine on the lowest spot I can on my windscreen. Screen is deep smoked so you can barely see it. Don't always have my bags on otherwise I would consider that option.
As long as your vehicle's plate is registered with the EZ pass data base you don't need to carry the transponder. The cameras photograph your plate regardless of a transponder. Then with some kind of recognition software cross reference the plate with their data base registry. And bill the appropriate account. When I first got my EZ pass I experimented with placement & tried a jacket pocket as recommend by EZ pass. Keep getting the "call EZ pass" light going through the tolls. Called their customer service line & was told as long as your bikes plate is in the data base your all set. I periodically check the account & see no sign of being charged an additional fee for not carrying a transponder. I let a buddy borrow one my transponders & he got the "call EZ pass" warning light. I called and was informed an unregistered vehicle was using my transponder. I explained the situation to the rep, added his bike to the account & was billed the amount for that toll. The only way their system could've known his bike wasn't registered to my transponder was by photographing his plate. If you have any doubts check with your states EZ pass website. The "frequently asked questions" sections have some good info. And yes, Big Brother is always watching!
Really, how much higher? Most of my toll activity is from cage commuting to work. I use toll roads a couple times a month on my bikes never with a transponder. Never noticed a difference in the billing. You got me thinking, I wonder if it varies by state here in the US?

Toll by plate is face value of the toll, if you run the sun pass, ez pass wut ever, you get a discount, least here in sunny FL.
Licence plate full value. Transponder discount. Administrative cees. What ever. No matter. Just cheaper here to ise transponder. I think ezee pass is a private company that contracts to the different authorities to collect tolls. I suspect it is the same everywhere in North America. Ours is only slightly higher. Not exactly sure how much.
You can blame the "loonies" on that one. We got hassled a while back going through the :canada:IAN side, is that your fault too? :joker: ound:
I had a chat with treo a little while back as my account was showing charges based on the decal and my plate. Fun enough, there is no lender plate recognition here. All plates are read by human eyes right now. Photos are taken and people are employed to review and record licence plates and vehicle descriptions. They even confirm if you are using a decal.
Anyone tried sticking it behind a fairing? It works in a glove box of a car, so I would think stuck to the inside of a fairing would work...and look nicest. Anyone?? Troy
Randy when I was commuting to work I worked out that slipping down the line between the lanes meant they couldn't pick me up, got away with it for years, no idea if they adapted the cameras now because all my bikes are on club reg and they get to travel for free because club reg bikes and cars are not on the main data base and hopefully this situation will remain for years to come :triumphant: Not many times you get a win but you take it whenever you can
Side pocket of my tank bag--it always works. Never had an issue in 6 years on the Penna Turnpike or DC. I love the guys who dig in the bag or their pocket and hold it up while driving by...cracks me up. Rental cars in Florida used to have a little aluminum lined plastic box if you didn't want to use the toll pass...you just closed it up in the box. Haven't seen that in a while because FL and Texas just read your plates.
