Lately I had been having some issues like headlights not turning on for no apparent reason. Then both turn signal indicators would be illuminated when the signals are not not in use. The high beam indicator would be on when on low beam, but turns off on high beam.

Well over the weekend I decided it was finally time to swap out the motor since 2nd gear is completely shot. I have a whole bike for parts so I figured I swap in a newer electrical harness too and that should take care the electrical issue. Nope. Swapped out all the various relays too. Have tried using a different set of switch gear too with no effect.

Right now the indicator lights still do the same weird stuff and I've noticed one of the rear signals won't turn on at all, the bulb is functional. When the other signal is on, the signal illumination alternates with the tail lights flashing.

The clock also turns off once the signals are turned on. And the backlighting doesn't seem to be working either.

Seems that the only possibility is the circuitry in the gauges. Current going where shouldn't and not going where it should. On the left lower rear side of the circuitry there is one path to the backlighting bulb that has corroded and could be defective. I tried a jumper wire and that didn't do anything. I tried another set of gauges and the high beam indicator works normally but the signal indicators, rear signals and tail lights are still screwy.

Not the first time I've had issue with corrosion in the back of the gauges. It would a good idea for everyone with these bike to apply grease or something to the whole thing as a precaution.

Any body with any other ideas?

I rather not buy another set of gauges if not needed.

    Items swapped out:
    Harness
    switches
    relays

The lights, horn, clock, etc. are all hot (+12V) on one side from the fuse box and some switch or relay closes the return path to ground to complete the circuit. You have some kind of short circuit to ground causing things to come on when not commanded, or an open-circuit that keeps the path open when it is supposed to be closed. Hard to see how since you replaced all that stuff...

How old is the battery and what is the voltage at rest, with key on, and when running at idle?

Sounds like a faulty ground. I would start with checking all grounding points. Seems like it's an issue with all vfr's.

Figured it out today. For whatever reason the electrical block on the harness I installed was wired differently than the tail light/turn signal sub-harness. So I rearranged the individual connectors. The clock still didn't work so I swapped my speedo/odometer into another dash.

Weird. Glad you got it sorted.
