I own an 06 VFR, the last two weeks or so it started doing this weird hesitation/surging thing. Just occasionaly at first, but it's steadily getting worse, to the point it's all the time. Here's the symptoms:

From a cold start it runs fine but once it's fully warmed up (170+ on the temp gauge):

-The engine surges under load, doesn't seem to make a difference what RPM...anywhere from idle on up. Though it's less noticeable up in VTEC range, it's still there. Cruising at 60mph in 4th, 5th, or 6th it's very noticeable.
-Won't hold a steady rpm with no load. Anything from idle up to 4000 rpm, with steady throttle application. For example, trying to hold the engine at 3000 rpm, it stutters all through the 2000 range, as soon as it gets to 2700 or so it jumps up to 3500, drops to 2600, up to 3200, drops to 2800, up to 3800, drops to 3200, up and down, up and down.
-It doesn't sound right, the exhaust note is off
-Gas mileage with same riding style dropped from 45 to 40

I don't think this is the "normal" engine management low RPM fuel conservation thing, I know what that feels like and this is much too severe for that.

I thought maybe I got a bad tank of gas, but put 3/4 tank of fresh gas in it yesterday from the same place I always get gas and have never had a problem with fuel from there before(which means almost nothing)...same symptoms.

It also seems like if it were "bad gas" the symptoms would be there all the time, not just once the engine is warmed up. True?

I'm planning to drop it off at the dealer service department later today. Just posting for support or the "don't be a dumbass, it's..." comment.

know this sounds simple but make sure your air filter is cleaned and clear.

One other thing I forgot to post, the inside the exhaust pipes is very sooty.

Foxman, an air filter after 1500 miles?

Plugs. Bad gas can foul them. Clean and replace.

well, I dropped it off at the dealer sunday, picked it up today. They weren't able to repeat the problem, it ran perfect for them. No charge, which is nice.

Guess I'll find out tomorrow when I ride it to work.

    Engine hesitating

I've a 10 month old VRF (UK ABS model), which also has a weird problem with the engine.

The engine appears to hesitate (stop and start) as if it's running out of fuel. It only happens when there is no load, at slow speeds in a high gear, ie 25mph in 4th.

I read that someone seemed to had their problem fixed, but do they know what it is?

    Any suggestions?

    I have a 2002
It has a funny hesitation between 4200 and 4800 rpm. Its not always there, just when i am cruising, trying to maintain a constant speed.
    Any thoughts?

Mine too - fine when it's cold but as soon as it warms up it kangaroos at anything from 2,500-4,500 revs if it's not under load, has a wickedly viscious throttle lag, fuel consumption is at least 10% up on my last non VTEC, feels like it's going to stall somethimes just as the VTEC kicks in and it has flatspots all the way up the rev range.

It's a complete pile of *@!% and I have had 4 VFRs now, do 12,000 miles a year and had 88,000 on my last one before trading it in. Honda are giving my dealer no help at all. The last thing was they promised to come and look at it, but there's no sign of them yet and after 4 months of riding the worst Honda I have ever owned, all I want to do is get my money back, tell the world how bad it is and buy something else.

The stupid thing is, I can see the bike should be fantastic, if only it would run right.

Eliminate all but the most minute amount of free play in the throttle cable...
spec is 2 to 6mm at the grip. I have adjusted mine to <2mm. Too much play makes it very hard to hold steady throttle.

Make sure that you have no binding issues when turning the bars from lock to lock, the idle speed should not vary.

You may have a problem with the Cam Position Sensor or it's wiring.

Just out of curiosity have any of ya done the PAIR Valve mode in a semi invisibly way? I heard about another Viffer who did a mod and the BB had rolled back and oout and the PAIR valve started working somehwat again but because it was now not fully connected it made the bike worse....
