Hello folks, my first post here :)

I recently bought my first VFR 800 (1999) and I have now replaced the rear brake pads. After this the rear brake hangs on a little bit after pressing the rear brake pedal. Don't know why but have to find out. The slider pins moves as they should, might be a seized piston? Any experience with this?
One more thing: I have read the brake bleeding / brake fluid replacement procedure and it says more than once; remove the rear caliper and then refit it again. Why should this be done, remove it and then put it back on?
Thanks for an excellent forum :)

Overwhelming response here... Update, the pistons were seized, replaced all the seals, works fine now.

Regarding the brake bleed procedure, the rear caliper has to be removed, in order to get the brake bleed screw at the highest point when bleeding :)

Hey Quattro, sorry your post got ignored, not typically the norm around here. Don't be discouraged by that, stick around as most of the time there's good info here. Had I seen this post I would have suggested checking for a stuck piston as my '01 I bought last year had a similar problem. Turned out that the 2 outer pistons on the rear caliper were nicked and the burrs were rubbing off the rubber of the seals gumming up the pistons. Same procedure you did, rebuilt the rear caliper and all is well now. Glad you got it sorted out.

    Cheers!

Yes as OOTV said, no replies is not the norm here!! There are lots of good people willing to try and help. I just did my brakes and contrary to what I've read, it's easier to just remove the caliper, .....once I figured out how LOL. Post up some pics of your ride!!

This forum is excellent :) I have only one 'old' pictures of my ride, now I have put on white turn indicators and an Yoshimura RS-3 slip on muffler (love the sound of it).

One thing that concerns me is the clunk-sound when changing gear upwards. My old '90 CBR600F makes no sound when changing gear, but my '99 VFR does. Quite a lot actually, and I don't like it at all. The engine has 31000 km on the counter and the clutch works fine. The engine oil is brand new, Motul 5100 ester 10W-40. Any suggestions?

I have the RS3 also and am very happy with it. Where did you find the white lens?? How many miles on your bike? Does the clutch feel like it's working properly?

The white lenses I bougt on ebay, perfect fit and quite good finish. I'll take a new picture later :)

My bike has 31000 km on the counter, about 19000 miles. The clutch is ok. Changing gear from 1st to 2nd and from 5th to 6th makes no sound, the rest does. When the engine is cold it makes no sound putting it into 1st gear (from neutral), but when warm it makes this clunk-sound.
Wonder, are the gear changes on your VFR smooth and quiet at all times? Thanks for your response :)

Yes mine are smooth all gears and temps, I'm at 24,000 miles. Keep an eye out here, someone will be along that knows more than me about it....

What kind of oil do you use? My neighbor uses Castrol Power 1 on his RC46 (37000 miles), and his makes almost no sound at gear change. My local Honda dealer recommended Motul 5100 10W-40 for my bike, maybe it's no good?

I started using Rotella T6 in both my VFRs with great results, but my Ducati didn't like it at all. Shifting was more difficult and when it did go into gear it was usually pretty rough. Ironic to your situation, it did like the Motul and shifts much better, but it think the viscosity is 20W-50 not 10W-40, so I'm sure that has a say in it as well.

    I run Amsoil 10w40 MCF.jpg
I used to run the Honda 10w40, I did notice smoother shifting since switching...

Is it too late to suggest you check the pistons?
As others have said, there is a great collective knowledge here. I guess everyone was out riding and no one saw your post.

Well, at least the viscosity of my oil is correct then. Maybe I'll try an other oil brand next year, ironic, 00TV had better gear shifts with the Motul. Future will show...

Y2Kviffer. I took som pictures of the white turn indicators. I wanted black/dark but they were a lot more expensive than the white ones. I use chrome bulbs, amber when lit.

Thanks, The pistons mooved freely (in my opinion), could press them in with one finger, still the brakes hang on a bit. I replaced the seals in the rear caliper (all of them), then everything was ok.

Thanks, you're welcome :) Gave US $34.99 for them, free shipping from China.

Both of my rides. The CBR has not been used after I bought the VFR ;) Maybe i'll sell it.

Correction, it is not Motul 5100 10W-40 semi syn on my VFR, it's Motul 10W-40 300V fully synthetic. (semi syn I use on my CBR). I guess the 300V fully synthetic should be 'better' than semi syn, or maybe not, for the gear box?

Great looking bike! I've been looking at those clear lens turn signals on ebay recently and will definitely have to pick some up now. I have a similar sound on my bike while shifting, I am using Castrol 5w40 Full syn. Need to change it back out to 10w40 and see if that helps. Other than that I am at a loss as well.
