Hey guys, I am possibly going to be getting a 2002 VFR 800 ABS with about 20,000 miles and it's pretty mint.

I am coming from a Suzuki SV1000S and am looking forward to a more comfortable riding position for myself and my passenger. Anything I should look out for specifically in the new bike any downfalls or common issues?

I'm going to wonder through the forum and try to find some good info.

    Thanks.

Make sure the recall was taken care of. Call local Honda dealer with your Vin #....good luck..
What kind of condition is it in?

Hi Scott and welcome to the world of VFRs!

If you got past the picture of Duccman's daughter :playful: ahemmm

obviously the usual wear items apply for any chain driven two wheeled beast and the wire harness recall should be done as well. You can actually go to the Honda website,
    https://www.myhonda.honda.ca/myHonda/myProducts.do

And register yourself as the owner of that bike. All you need is the VIN# to do it. Once you are registered it will tell you if there are any open recalls or if and when they were done.

The VFR does have a few "known" issues but they are hard to inspect for visually as they mostly involve issues with the charging system. They include failed stators and regulator rectifier units (RR units) as well as overheated connectors that melt and subsequently fail. Many of us have replaced our RR units with aftermarket items or even Yamaha parts that seem to last longer. There is also a wire harness upgrade kit available through http://www.wiremybike.com/ which substantially fortifies the harness between the battery and the RR unit so you see many owners doing this modification as well.

Early 6th gen bikes like the 2002 you are looking at suffer from lean fueling at low speeds and engine RPMs which makes it surge, it could be described as being "snatchy" and it is a pain in the arse. The fix often involves the installation of a Power Commander and removal of the PAIR system as well as the air box snorkel.

The chain, sprockets, and tires just got replaced and had its 16k service professionally done not to long ago. It has a power commander, Corbin seat, and the front and rear springs have been replaced to handle a heavier rider. Which is good for me since I'm 6'2" 205 without gear.

Is this bike good for a taller rider?

Planning in doing a test drive last this week.

I am 6'3" 300# and although I haven't ridden an 800 the VFR's tend to be comfortable for a taller rider. Would recommend a double bubble or touring windscreen, the stock one may just push the air right into your face.

6' 2" and 240 with a bad back, but always found the bike comfortable. I could do 350-400 miles a day, which for me was just fine. Maybe I got a back back cuz I'm 6'2" and 240? Anyway...

If you really didn't like the position, there are HeliBars and a couple options to lower your pegs that you could check in to.
