I use to have a '90 RC30 and really appreciated the DZUS fasteners that came on
the body panels. Obviously these were put on these bikes, like the RC45, to allow quick removal and replacement of body panels during pit stops. What I don't understand is why Honda, in their infinite wisdom, doesn't provide these kinds of fasteners on ALL of their VFRs. Instead we get the real crappy little plastic thingies that are not only hard to remove and replace, but break if you look at them sideways!
So...here is my question to all...has anyone converted their VFRs over to using DZUS fasteners? I am talking about the same ones on the RC30 and RC45 bikes.
I did find a websites that sell these connectors. One is:
    http://shopphilly.com/promotionpartsclub/index.php?item_id=352,
    and the other is:
    http://www.southco.com/product/default.aspx?hid=7514.
I have tried a few of the suggested plastic fasteners on various threads here but they were not much better than the original CRAP that Honda gave us. I know that Dzus fasteners would cost more, but the ease of maintenance and the time saved would more than make up for the additional cost. At Pro-Motion Parts Club the cost of 6 of these is $39.95. If the cost on a stock VFR were $100.00 I would be more than happy to pay, just to save my skinned knuckles and to reduce my cussing during maintenance hours!
I would be happy to receive emails on this problem. My address is:
    porsche.bob@sbcglobal.net.
Thanks for letting me vent :frown:

    SouthCo owns Dzus.
Aircraft Spruce sells the things pretty inexpensively.
I bought a dozen full sets (Fastner, socket, washer, spring) for under $12.00.
After you've ordered them once, the mystery of the catalogs become decipherable!

hmm, that's interesting. i bought some of the plastic ones but not quite the same as the original and they fit so tight that I can't push the insidethrough to snap them together... maybe I should try these dzus...

    dzus for vfr fairings

    Hi Bob,
Have you had any success with setting up the vfr fairings for dzus fasteners? I was looking at the list of dzus products and realized it would sure be helpful to find someone who has done the job already and knows the correct parts to order.

So, Gatekeeper, what about filling us in on the correct items so that we don't have to search for ourselves??

I may be able to help u guys. I am an aircraft mechanic he sees dzus fasteners day in and day out. A nickname for them is camlocs. u must have the hosuings though or sockets in which u can twist and turn them into. on aircraft the housings are riveted into airframe structures. I am not sure what u would use to mount them on plastic besides loctite. I'll look and see if we have any plastic structures with camlocs in our interiors. I do know that for those rubber grommets for the screws u can replace them with similiar hardware used for aircraft cargo floorboards.

something to keep in mind- if it's quick and easy for you to take off, it will be quick and easy to steal. body panels aren't traceable, and ebay isn't easy to track.

The spring receptacle would have to be riveted to the fairing, no problem bcause its hidden by the outer panel. I'm wondering if anyone has used the snap in style ones, if they fit directly in the panels ok.

I'd use the security screw heads for panel security.

    Thanks,
    SCW

I was able to reuse some leftover from my 916. You can see some in my photo gallery on the left.

I will have to take a look at the drag bike since it does have some on it to fasten its fiberglass panels. the sockets are riveted to the chassis on it and of course the other part is on the panel. Im going to look into a source for these because i have been debating their use on my VF for the two sets of body work i now have thanx to the purchase of the parts bike.

    Dzus for vfr fairings

JD, nice on the use of the 916 fasteners, looks real good. next time you have a panel off, could you take a close shot of how you affixed the socket/ female part?
    These Viffers are sure pretty.

The 3 male quarter-turn Dzus fasteners on each side near the turn signal fit into female receptacles that clip onto the body panels. The 4 machine screws that hold down the black plastic top panels were replaced with quarter-turn Panex fasteners that also fit into the same female receptacles. The 2 fasteners nearest the trailing edge of each side fairing and the fasteners that hold down the seat cowl are not Dzus or Panex fasteners. The are D-headed machine screws.

Attached, I hope, is a picture of the male dzus fasteners and the clip-on female receptacles.

If you're interested, I have a stash of left-over clips and male fasteners, including 6 pristine gold male fasteners that I installed on the sides near the turn signals, but subsequently decided against.

Does anyone have pics of how the female clips mount on the inside? Just got my clips and haven't looked yet but want an idea for when I can get around to it. Thanks in advance.
