Alright guys I'm new to this site. I've just bought my first bike project a 84 vf 500 f2 in a bit of a mess it's been off the road since 2007 and I'm thinking what to do to it if I should make in it to a street fighter or restore it to original state any ideas would be great image.jpg image.jpg

Don't do/spend anything until you have taken off the cam covers and had a good look at the valve gear.

I agree with Jeremy and would add that even if the valve gear passes inspection I would also do a compression test before proceeding. If it has good compression on all 4 cylinders it will probably run OK after a carb disasembly and cleaning. Get a Factory Service Manual and search here for tons of info on getting non running 500s back on the road. I bought a non-running 500 that was "running fine when I parked it" and had to do a lot to get it going, but they are fun bikes to ride so it was worth it. Good Luck!

    Sounds good then.
IMO VFs (and water cooled bikes in general) don't make good street fighter candidates. Too many hoses/thermostat housings/radiators etc etc.
There are still plenty of VF500s about in the UK, and parts and whole bikes often come up on Ebay. New parts are a different story and there isn't too much avaialble these days. It is a great bike to own and ride though.

Don't flog it, mate. 500s don't like too many of revs up top.

Gap, I'm a VF nut in Birkenhead. Let's meet up and swap notes. I have a 400, a couple of 500s and a 750. All 1980s. Of course!

Flog in the UK and Ireland means to sell by the way. But I think we get your drift.
