I own a '95 VFR that I am so happy with that I am looking to add an earlier version.. I have located an '84 in pretty nice shape. Owner is asking $3,800. What should I be paying fairly? What problems should I look out for on this bike?
    Thanks much,
    Steve

You can get a better, newer, more reliable '86/'87 VFR for alot less. Cam wear could be a problem on that one as well as a useless rear shock. How many miles ?? Could be a record-high asking price. :homer:

Ya, $3,800 is about double what those are worth imo. You might want to take a look at what Kelly BB has to say tho.

And (as squirrelman says), the relatively common cam wear problems on those bikes can make them worth even less.

Besides being more reliable, the '86 has gobs more power and weighs less. Also has the better exhaust note. I may be biased though.

Well, with everyone's feedback and great information, I will pass on the '84 and turn my search to an '86/'87. Any leads?
    Thanks much,
    Steve

Search and keep searching. Honda corrected the various faults inherent in VF designs with the VFR. Fine-quality examples are usually around $2500-$3200.
