This has probably been covered before but the search shows up so many posts when I type in sprockets ---you know what I mean. Anyway as the new owner of a 05 machine I was cleaning chain and rear sprocket when I noticed a "45". So I look up the stock sprocket on Bike Bandit and it says 43 is stock, also looking at a chain and sprocket kit it states 16 and 43. My question is should I go back to the 43 when I replace the chain or stay with a 45? A new 45 that is. pro or cons out there? Thanks
It depends on you. Are you happy with the 1st gear acceleration? Unhappy with the higher rpm at interstate speeds? If the former keep the 45, if the latter go back to 43. It's all personal preference.
Check if a Speedo Healer was installed, too. If the PO did that when they went to the 45 tooth, if you go back to the 43, I assume your reading will be incorrect. Or if they never put the speedo healer on, then the speed you see now is incorrect and will be corrected when back to stock. Not that any of the speedo's are correct from the factory to begin with...
None of them are accurate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedometer As mention above if the current set up not bother you then use them until time to replace with the proper size recommented by the manual.
Mine is 3 mph fast, every time I go by one of those radar signs indicating your speed, it is low by 3 mph (10%).
To the OP, if you're not already aware of this site, gearingcommander.com, you should check it out. There is a buttload of info about gearing & the VFR is in their database. You can see info for various sprocket combos, theoretical wear rates, and so on. It's a helpful place  ... I run a 17/45 combo with 520 chain. The diff. in ratio from 16/43 is negligible, but I like a more 'open' radius for the chain to travel around. ACE
Riding today, 5000 rpm equaled 70 mph on the GPS, speedo read 75. How does this compare with the stock sprocket size?
