Metal piece behind rear brake pedal

    Just got a 6 th, honestly have not had alot of time to look out over but this rusting beat up piece sticks out like a sore thumb. Can I just spray it, tried to look for a replacement on Ron Ayers to no avail.

    Its a heat shield for the exhaust down tubes coming out of the rear 2 cylinders. It can be sprayed or powder coated, just make sure it's a high temp coating.

    It is a heat shield and yes take her out clean her real good and spray couple coat of high heat paint. Good as new

    Thanks, I'm still in the "staring at it every chance i get" phase and generally like stuff looking nice, first cheapo improvement for me coming up!

    The high heat paint works. Paint both sides. Best to remove as much rust as possible first. There are some rust converters on the market in rattlecans by Krylon. Krylon is a Sherwin-Williams company.

    A quickie is to mask off the area, brush on some of the non aerosol rust converter, let it cure and brush on some of the high heat paint.

    Seen this done but I have not tried it. Pull the shield and just cover it up with some aluminum shimstock and som pop rivets. I think what I saw was not even shimstock but a chunk cut from an aluminum can.

    If anyone has a source for new ones. I am looking too..

    If you can find a place nearby that does powder coating, you could get it re-done in black or what ever color you like. Either that or use some high heat paint. I had mine powder coated about 4 years ago on my fifth gen and it takes the heat fine and shows no signs of peeling or bubbling. Cost me $20 so the paint would have been more to do it myself by the time I bought some sand paper, primer and paint.

    One word of note. The two bolts that hold the rear brake master cylinder are attached to the back of that plate on my bike and may be on yours. Mine had two nuts and lock washers on the back of the plate that made it easy to remove. The bolts were threaded in to the master cylinder so when I tried to back out the bolts, both of them sheared off right behind the socket head at the top of the bolt. Apparently on mine you are supposed to remove the nuts first and then remove the master cylinder. Maybe check to see if you can loosen the nuts on the back of your heat shield before (if so equipped) before trying to back out the bolts. You may have to remove the Allen bolts that hold the rear set on so you can turn the whole assembly to see if the shield has the nuts on the back of the heat shield or whether the nuts are welded to the plate.

    My oops wound costing me about $20 extra cause apparently only Honda sold the Allen head bolts that were threaded the full length of the bolt, and longer than anywhere locally that carried ones the right size. Unless of course I bought a pack of 100 at the bolt supply store. Needless to say I went to the dealer for the lower cost option. LOL. Doooh
