Hey rvmiller- don't leave so much exposed open area of the u-lock available. Theres a way to break those locks that you are giving ample room to do.

There are ways to get past locking nuts too- just in case you had absolute security in mind.

I've spent years coveting my stuff and trying to figure out how to prevent losing it.

Best bet is to take pictures, copy serial numbers, contact your insurers to pay any additional accessories insurance (most policies have enough to cover) and hang onto receipts.

In the unfortunate and unlikely event of a loss, you'll also probably only get a portion of the actual paid back because of depreciation. That's how they reimburse on stuff- not what you paid or even what it might cost to replace in similar condition.

Our vfrs aren't so popular anyway. They aren't race bikes or popular for stunting so as a whole or parts they aren't sought after.

Best bet is a cover. Keeps away joy riders and scavengers.

I'm more concerned about my helmet or jacket getting ripped off so if I can't pack it with me I use a 1" thick cable lock through the sleeve and chin bar.

I just googled and found out my cable lock is only rated at a 4:10 on the kryptonite website.

I googled how to break or get past it and found out that a lot of the round key locks such as found on the u-locks can be broken into with a cheap run of the mill plastic pen.

In fact some locks rated by kryptonite at 10:10 security were ones I just watched get picked by amateurs on u-tube.

    Crazy!!

anything can be stolen if the thief is determined enough. I just prefer to make them work for it. I have locking lugs on all 3 of my VFRs. The honda part number is 08W42-SCV-101. You get 4 in a pack and a lug nut "key" with a little nylon pouch.

Please post a pic with the wheel locks installed when you can. I kinda have this irrational fear of my rear wheel disappearing in middle of the night. Been thinking about in stalling these myself.

Hey I remember seeing that bike for sale on Ebay down in the keys somewhere. That Ferrari emblem really looks good on there.

Yup, went down to the Keys and got it; spent the weekend down there. The seller and I were/are both Army Veterans and we had both served at the same Fort/same Brigade in Georgia at the same time but we had never met. I am still loving my VFR

Thank you for your service sir:eagerness: Hopefully no one screws with your bike. I would get the cover on as soon as possible.

Another tip. Always keep your chain/cable/lock away from the ground. It gives them more leverage when they can set one end of the bolt cutters on the ground, then use their weight to push down.

I saw that reddit post too. Tons of good info. I don't think our VFR's are too sought out. Mostly sport bikes and Harley's within 3 years of being new are the real targets (apparently)

Oh also, always use your steering lock. And disc locks should go on the rear, instead of the front.

I had a Denver clamp and a Heavy cable on my Aprilia scooter. They cut the cable and weakened the clamp arm with bolt cutters. I got the scoot back stripped two days later.

    Dude, that sucks.

Apparently though, thieves are not interested in VFRs

Like said here before, if they really want your bike, they are going to get it. All you can do is discourage them so they move on to some other bike rather than yours. Keep in mind if you are using a cable lock of any kind, the cable should be a braided type rather than the more common twisted cable. The braided cable will flatten before it cuts where the twisted kind cuts easily. Bicycle locks are fro locking bicycles. They do serve as a level of protection but not ideal. There is lots of good advice here already and so long as you make some effort to secure your bike, you lessen the chance of becoming a victim. Every level you add, increases your security. Thieves do not like noise and light. High profile parking spots are also a deterrent. All this is called target hardening in the Crime Prevention world. I am sure your old man has mentioned that term somewhere down the line.

But please answer me this. If you have the locking lug nuts, do you carry your key with you when you ride? If you don't, isn't that going to prove to be a real pain in the ass should you get a flat, or have to remove your wheel when a long distance away from home?

Well bro...if they want it..they will steal it. Had a FZR1000 for three weeks..krypto on the rear wheel and a huge rubber coated chain around a pole with a high grade lock. the shitter was..it was parked next to my room mates 17k Harley......thats what the cop said...these guys have diamond blades on their saws.. They even took my cover....sorry for the downer.
If anything I would take that cable and loop it on your frame..then around the pole.
They have wheel chaulks that bolt into the ground also. Just a thought
Good luck.....shit 4 bolts and take your wheel in with ya
