Ok. Im at about 850 miles. I scheduled my first service at 550 miles (a month ago). Every shop is backed up a month. I asked the dealer was it ok that im gonna be over. He said sure its ok. I just dont want to mess things up by going over by 300+ miles. My actual appointment is not till the 30th.

For me half the fun of owning motorcycles is maintaining and adding mods to them myself - one of my first purchases is always a Clymer's. Whatever you do, you need to change the oil and filter and lube/check chain adjustment NOW, or park it until you pay someone else to do it (what a foreign concept to me).

According to my Clymer's (these things cost $20 and are invaluable. They can save a decent home mechanic thousands over the life of a vehicle) the initial 600 mile service includes what I said and check engine idle speed, check brake system, check nuts, bolts and other fasteners and check steering play. So the answer to your question is yes, provided the person who set the bike up wasnt a monkey. Checking these other things would take a few minutes, but I'd think if there was a problem here you'd know it through riding it.

I agree that I would get the oil out sooner rather than later. Don't wait for the dealer. It is simple enough to do yourself and it will save you money. Either get a filter from the dealer or get an aftermarket filter from a bike shop. I have never had a problem walking in and not being able to get one. While you're there, buy 3.3 quarts of your favorite oil.

To change it, you will need to remove the left side fairing, pull the drain plug, change the filter then add your oil. It really is a very painless process. Make sure that you read the manual for how to remove the black plastic fasteners on the fairing. You need to push the center of them in before they will come out.

with your milage theres not much to really service other than engine oil and chain tension every one should know how to adjust chain its should be checked before every long ride. check your coolant level as well. brakes should be still like new. the hardest part is removing left fairing, like stewartj says read the manual those clips are a pain and easy to break if done incorrectly
