New 05 VFR owner here. Doing first oil change and noticed this black cylinder with no hose connected to the top intake or output. Is this normal and what is it? I promise not to ask such basic questions once I get my Owners manual and Repair manual in the mail. Thank you.

It is the charcoal canister for the evaporative emission control (EVAP) system, all is normal with the open connection.

What it does: it collects the evaporated unburned fuel and "reuses it" to reduce the fuel waste and be more friendly to the environment.
It is a magical invention of the California Air Polution Board(CARB) and it will save the world some day
