Got the Gen 5 on my short list and found one nearby...but, "got hit by the side of the road so no ferings. All else is OK. Rebuild title due to insurance write off as totaled."

Now, scuse me guys but I do not like the plastic bubble look of the fully faired VFR. Looks OK in black or BRG (I know, not as fast) or with only the front fairing. Do not like the rear or side plastic work. Kind of a "naked" or standard guy in terms of apearance but I do value performance. 120 mph is plenty fast.

19,000 miles on it. $$$ definitly an issue. Mechanically inclined.

So...what should I look for? ...what should I pay for it?

    My other bikes:
VF1100c, 1984, toning down the Japanese chopper look, good bye shiny plastic and polished aluminum. Good bike! Garage find brought back from the dead. Love the big V4! Ride with Harley guys. VRod and Magna pass cars at will on 9,000" passes. Fun!

2001 SV650, upgraded suspension, sweet! Got it for my son from an old friend.

Have a thing for "cult bikes".

I guess it depends on just how much damage was done to the bike; a simple "hit" with the fairings gone should not be a write-off, so there may be more to the story. That being said, have it checked over by a qualified mechanic to ensure no irreparable damage was done so you don't end up spending a ton of money trying to fix a bike that, ultimately, you will not get your money back out of (the vast majority of people shy away from salvage titled vehicles, including myself). If you plan on keeping the bike, that may not be an issue.

If you're serious, have it checked out and throw an offer out there; you can always go up in price when negotiating, but you can't go back down...

So, parts are available eh? Nice! Yea, I am a project kind of fella. Love to make my bikes the way I want them, usually different than factory. Custom 5th Gen would be fun. After reading about the low resale prices these gorgeous bikes bring and if it looks good, I will offer a lowball figure. (Man, used bikes and VFRs in particular, seem like great deals!) It is in a very afluent town where every body thinks their s**t is gold so...?

    Thanks guys!

You married your wife, the bike is your mistress. And you can rider as hard and as long as you want.

In short, take your time. Find a clean title with no damage ( or as little as you can find) then grab her and go.

If it's mechanically sound and a good price, I'd go for it.

Sounds like you're going to lose the fairings anyway so I think re-sale is not an issue. I think a salvage title and a clean title bike but stripped down and customized have about the same or similar value in the end. Possibly because most just assume a bike that's been turned into a fighter or whatever has been done so because it was damaged.

Like the mini fairing and exhaust, if he can get it to work.

    Update, NO SALE!
Rode to Jackson and got ambushed. Had another buyer there and tried to start a bidding war. Smelled funny. It was YELLOW! Really unloved. Asked if he had the chain tightening tool, said no, he never needed to tighten the chain. Chain was rusty, rear sproket OK. Needed tires. Seems like he "just rode it". Offered $1500, counter was $1700. Let it go. Now I can start looking for an 08 Uly again. Not quite the deals compared to VFRs, Got more dirt roads than paved out here anyway. Thanks for the advice viffers. Still keeping an eye out.
