hi everyone. i have a 2001 honda vfr 800. has 34,800 miles on it. the problem im having is: after its warmed up at 97 degrees I take off,the rpms climb to 3-4 thousand. which im just trying to idle down through my trailer park. at stop signs its like dumping the clutch. after a short bit the issue goes away. So anyone have a clue what the problem is?

Sticky wax unit, sensor failing, sticky throttle assembly. Sounds like too much air is bypassing the throttle plates.

Inspect, measure and compare to fsm. Then report back

Look between the throttle bodies, on the front half is a silver cylinder with a rod sticking out. When cold this unit helps keep the engine idled up. Once the engine is warmed the wax unit allows the bike to idle normally. It has two hoses on the bottom with coolant going through them.

If you go to vfrd and get the service manual (the links here dont work) then you can see the whole process to getting at this thing.

Other VFR owners (including me) have had the same problem--a high 4k idle, usually when warmed up. While I haven't seen a thread where somebody has definitively found the problem, replacing the wax high idle unit seems to fix the problem.

Other owners have said to simply lubricate the linkages for the wax unit. I'd start with that.

Ronayers.com or partzilla.com. About $45. The online guides for replacing the VFR's thermostat will show you how to replace the wax unit.

The high idle problem is no longer an issue. pulled tank and air box. some cleaning and spraying with WD40. and played around with flapper value. Thanks guys for your input.
