I have had this bike since new. At one point 8 years ago after sitting for 5 years I got it going with a clean tank and new hydroloc clutch then what I think is the carbs went out of sync. I drained fuel and has been sitting in garage ever since. Any mechanics on the east coast interested in some
Work getting it back in shape. I'm in Maryland, let me know. I've since moved on to a goldwing but would love to have this back in the stable.

Carbs don't suddenly go out of synch, so i'd suspect some other problem; but if you'd be interested, i could go through yours, cleaning and adjusting whatever until they're in good running condition, as i do for members of this and other forums, with over 45 years of carb repair experience. :loyal:

Squirrelman where are you located. I have an 86 Gl 1200 that could probably use a carb balance too.

Don't send your carbs out for a synch. They must be done on the bike as each cylinder can draw differently. You can however get close with a bench synch which you can easily do yourself but they still should be synched after with the bike running.

Bench check the sync of the carbs. Find the carb that has the big idle control knob. We'll call this one carb #1 in this example.

#1 carb is adjusted with the black idle knob. Place a 1/8 inch wide strip of printer paper between the throttle plate and bore on # 1 carb.
Adjust the black idle knob until there is a slight drag on the paper.
Next, place a strip into #3 carb. Adjust the screw on the linkage for the same drag. There must be 2 springs on the adjuster for it to work properly. One on the screw, one in the linkage.
Verify that the linkage between the front and rear carbs is in place and that the bushing are tight.
Next, place a strip into #2 carb. Adjust the screw on the linkage for the same drag. There must be 2 springs on the adjuster for it to work properly. One on the screw, one in the linkage.
Next, place a strip into #4 carb. Adjust the screw on the linkage for the same drag. There must be 2 springs on the adjuster for it to work properly. One on the screw, one in the linkage.

An alternative method uses the small hole in the carb throat to set the plates. The plates should be set so that half the hole is visible. The hole is opposite the paper shown in carb #1.

Go slow and make very small adjustments. A slight turn of the screw can make a big adjustment. Open the throttle fully a few times then recheck everything. It's not uncommon to have to do it a few times to get it close. Then borrow, buy, or make your own manometer if you want it spot on for your particular bike.

I think after 29 years I might benefit from a total rebuild. I'm not all that convinced last time I had them off the bike they went back together totally correct. Squirrelman what's the estimate on a rebuild and bench synch?
