    Hi All,

I have been given a 55 plate VFR800A4. I haven't ridden in many years but would like to get the bike up to a good quality and go touring in the summer.

There are a couple of little things on the bike which i would like to sort of prior to going away and wondering if you can help with them.

First its a clean and tidy bike but there is a mark on the fram pictures below, its a surface scratch I think, not corrosion. Any ideas how I can tidy that up a a bit.

    Untitled-5.jpg

Also under the seat there is a power commander 3 unit, loads of graphs in the service history but not sure how it actually works.

Its runs really nice but has been sitting a while so I would like to perform an oil change this weekend, what is the recomended oil for this bike? 10w40?

And lastly, can anybody recommend me some good touring tires for this bike.

    Thanks

Asking about oil and tires gets you a lot of opinions and different thoughts on what's best so be prepared for the onslaught of responses! With that, Welcome to The World! and congratulations on your new (to you) ride.

Not to leave questions unanswered, yes 10w40 is the recommended viscosity but what brand and type (Dino vs. Synthetic) would be your choice. I run Rotella T6 in my VFRs. Tires are a whole other ball of wax, most VFR riders seem to choose a sport/touring tire like the Michelin Pilot Road series (I've been using the PR2 version on 2009) but like oil, brands are personal preference IMO. Being that your in the UK (I assume by your profile) the PR3 or PR4 are supposed to be better for wetter road conditions, which seem to be a common place in the UK.

    Cheers!

Welcome! First off, you better post some pics of the bike...otherwise certain people who shall remain nameless might accuse you of fibbing.:eek-new: As far as tires, I swear by Michelin PR3's. If it's been sitting a while, it couldn't hurt to run some seafoam thru it also. As far as the frame, maybe some metal polish like Mother's or something similar?? I'm afraid someone else will have to chime in about the PC3....I know very little about them.

Welcome! As for the frame try some wax cleaner. That frame looks like its painted or coated & a metal polish would do more harm than good.

Congrats on the bike! It looks as though it's in good shape! Tires: I run Bridgestone Battlax BT023's on mine; oil: A blend.

I'm in OOTV's camp on this one, oil=Rotilla t6 (Walmart) and Michlin Pilot Road 3's , my friend gets about 12,000 mi. on these tires, and that's on a BMW RT1200! I only have 3,000 mi on my PR3's but they still look new.
    Congrats on the new ride.

The gentleman with the inherited bike might like a download of the service manual. Is the Shell 10-40 Rotella called that in UK?

Thank God he posted some pix... In accordance with the 11th Commandment sent down from on high and writ on some kinda rock stuff. Probably plastic...

Hi and by the looks of it, the folks over the Pond have already said welcome to the MadHouse:welcome:

(Was out on the VFR after watching the Tour de Romandie cycle race - just over the pass in Switzerland).

That looks a very nice inheritance. Looking at the extras they fitted, it suggests the owner really enjoyed that bike. That's a very nice touring screen and the power commander really helps smooth out power delivery on the earlier vtecs.

The bike looks in such good condition you will want to take your time getting used to the bike. Many shorter or lighter riders find they are heavy beasts and inclined to adopt horizontal parking mode with little or no warning especially when stationary or at low speeds. So you may want to consider fitting some R&G frame sliders - which might help save your pride and your wallet.

    :focus:

As for tyres and oil - mine is on its second set of Battlax BT023s which suit my type of riding - huge touring mileages and lots of mountain twisties (first set covered 11,500 miles). If you want a more sport oriented tyre, the Pirelli P3 corners on rails, but probably won't last as long. 10w40 semi synthetic is what you need - as for brand don't go cheap!

To get the best out of your bike don't forget to spend time getting the bike suspension settings adjusted for your weight and riding style - most dealers have trained staff who will be happy to help sort this out and can be well worth the cost.

    Take care

Playing devils advocate here. That vin plate has the appearance of being tampered with. From my little computer anyways. Are you confident that is not an issue? My vin plate is a sticker and yours looks like it is a metal tag with what appears to be a rivet on the left side as shown in your photograph.

Hi, I have known the bike for a while. The VIN plate is the same as a friend who has a vfr 800 here in the UK. Also it matches with all the service history and manual. Can any other UK vfr owners confirm they have a plate or sticker?

The bikes sold over there may have a different requirement for the attachment of VIN plates than we do over here. So I could be raising flags that should be left neatly packed away. Then again, your just asking a question or two is no harm either.
