recently went back the the place where I trained to pass my test along with my '99 VFR (of which I am enormously proud). My ex-instructor, who I respect, took one look out the window. "what have you got, a VFR750?". "nearly, a VFR800, early model" I replied. His response: "souless bike. Will do everything you want it to, but you'll be bored to death with it within a year and then sell it". I couldn't believe my ears.. must admit to being somewhat taken aback. Has anyone else experienced this reaction to VFRs?

What does your "instructor" ride? He may be a salesdood for whatever he is riding. Worse he might be one of those harleydoods fresh out of the closet.

"souless bike" is pretty harsh. Your assessment of YOUR machine is yours. You can respect his ability to teach how to ride safely and so on, but that doesn't have to extend to his opinions of bikes.

Would you respect his views on the local fish 'n' chips shop if he's a vegetarian? :playful:

    Enjoy your ride!

Obviously your instructor has never ridden a VFR or perhaps he has never heard the exhaust note on one with an aftermarket exhaust. LOL. My 2000 VFR is one of the nicest bikes I have ever owned (yes, I admit I'm partial) and the only bike that I might have liked a bit more (just because it sounded a tad bit better) was my 97 VFR 750.

Everyone has their own taste in bikes and their own preference in riding style. The VFR may not be the best "sport bike" and it may not be the best "touring bike" but it was named the best sport touring bike for something like 15 years in a row. That in itself says something IMHO. The best judge of your bike though is "What do you think?" Really, it doesn't matter what your old riding instructor thinks of the bike you ride, so long as you enjoy riding it.

Have fun, ride safe, and keep her shiny side up. :triumphant:

hmm.. one of my fav bands from the '80s - Prefab Sprout - had a line in a song:
"But two things you should be slow to criticize
A man's choice of woman and his choice of work"..

you can add "Choice of bike.." to the list..

I have never heard a bad word from anyone with knowledge of the VFR line say anything bad about them. They may say that it isn't their style or type of ride, but they always are impressed with the bikes.

This guy sounds like a tool.

Check out some of the "words" from the anointed aboot the 1200.. The one with the shaft drive that will put ya in a ditch, the short range, the brakes, the weight, the color, the can, not too much on the power band though. Thankee Jesus..

One of the legend crooners in the world, Tony Bennet, sang "I left my heart in San Francisco", back about the same time. Somehow I don't think either were aware of this lovely thing.

People have been putting shit on Honda's for ever. How they lack character or are soulless & yet their the manufacturer that everyone else either copies or tries to out do. A bike mag a few years ago voted the CBR600 the worst bike in history, based on the fact that it was the bike that did everything so well it was boring. I met some guys down at the my local & they rode old English "Classics", pre 70's stuff & they put shit on Japanese bike as a whole. Yeah, so they where such good bikes that the Japanese wiped out the English bike industry in less than a decade, due to price & lets no forget reliability. Not saying that pommie bikes were bad, that just made the same old, same old.
Anyone the criticizes Honda bikes for being boring, has never owned one & are ignorant wankers for it.

With an instructor like that it is complimentary to you that you learned in spite of his dull opinions.

I once dated this chick and thought she was dull. We broke up and the next guy married her - go figure. Maybe if she had been willing to do everything I wanted her to....

He probabably drinks Budweiser too. I think his description of your bike is similar to what I think of Bud. Most people I talk to say the same thing about it. Yet Bud is probably USA's largest seller lager.

Thanks all for your views, and reassurance. I tried around a dozen bikes before settling on a VFR. It stood out from the crowd, and the rumble as it fires up is enough on its own to make me smile. I'm very proud of my VFR 800, and the great support from fellow VFR owners on this forum - thank you!

Another thing - most of the VFR riders I know are really good riders, not squids but smooth and fast. A fraternity!

Reg Pridmore is The Boss. Most anyone riding with him and could keep him anywhere in sight would also be a "Bad" ass IMHO, but I digress.
