I tipped over on my previously pristine 2007 VFR 800 (candy glory red) yesterday. Major digs on the upper fairing, lower right fairing and oil cover. Also digs on bar end, right mirror and passenger foot peg. I also snapped off the slide extension on the rider foot peg.

I have literally been crying about this for two days. My wife bought be this bike new off the showroom floor in spring 2008 and I love it so much. I'm not ashamed to say that.

Anyhow, no one in my town paints bike parts and I don't see how anyone could get close to the paint job so it would match the left side again. I am going to try to save enough to purchase replacement parts (even though I got laid off last month and my daughter starts college in the fall). My wife is on board because she knows what the bike means to me.

So... where is the best place to get replacement plastic? My local Honda dealer can get me the upper and lower fairings for about $900 total.

I think he is talking about the peg feeler.

Do you not have full coverage insurance to cover the repairs? After all that is what insurance is for!! A low deductible would reduce your out-of pocket costs by 1/2 or more.

Sucks man. I'd leave it alone for a while, in my case, and knowing how clumsy I'm getting with age, more than likely is bound to happen again.

Sorry to hear it man, the first drop is definitely the worst. I'm with mofo on this one. While I totally understand the want for a pristine bike again, this might not be the last drop. You could consider touching up the painted parts and living with it.

You can try pricing out the parts on Ron Ayers, too, but it seems PartZilla is a bit cheaper. You could make some money back by selling the slightly damaged parts on ebay.

I second shopping around on-line for the parts. There will probably be free shipping. Other places to look are Bike Bandit and Cheap Cycle Parts.

I, like you, "have" to have my MC in pristine condition. My cars and other appliances - not so much. I think this is a mental disorder :) That being said over the last 10 years I have replaced both lower cowls once and the upper cowl twice on my 5th gen. The 5th Gen has the unfortunate design feature that when it goes down the marker/directional light will take out the upper cowl. So keep in mind, if you keep the VFR long enough, this might not be the last time it tips over.

Thanks everyone. My wife said to check my insurance coverage, too, s I will call today. Deadsmiley that is exactly the list of parts I need (and yeah, peg feeler is what I'm thinking of). I priced them at BikeBandit and they were over $1200. And nearfreezing's suggestion to sell the slightly damaged parts on eBay is fantastic. Because of the money situation I am probably forced to take mofo's advice. This was a stupid move on my part for trying to park it without properly evaluating the terrain first. I'm not getting smarter in my old age (53) so there is probably more of this medicine in my future. My wife says it's a blessing that it was only a tipover and not something worse. No broken bones or anthing. I'm inclined to agree because I'm looking for any silver lining I can find right now. Thank you everyone. I will check in more often. Every time I have ever had a question or needed advice, VFRworld has been my go-to source. You guys are great.

I dropped my 1998 in the garage the first day I owned it. It was pretty nice for a bike that was 10 years old at the time.

Can you post of some pics of the damage? Is it a 20 footer now? (looks good at 20 feet)

At least you didn't drop it by forgetting to put down the kickstand before dismounting :) I am suffering CRS more and more often these days. I put my damage plastic up on the VFR boards (vfrworld, VFRD) and sold them in a couple days. Bonus, it was a local rider so I didn't have to ship them.

My first drop with this bike was when I left the kickstand down and I took it off the center stand. I quickly learned three things.

    1) Make sure the kickstand is UP when take the bike down from the center stand.

    2) Sit on the bike when taking it down from the center stand.

    3) Don't park your bikes too close together. No noticeable damage to the CBR. It could have been a lot worse.

I need to praise my wife here. I have owned the bike for some time, but she kept the collision coverage on the insurance (probably because I was employed then) and so I have a $250 deductible. I looked at the damage again today. I'll post some pics tomorrow when the weather improves and I can get it out of the garage.

After the tip, I took it to a pretty good body shop that formerly did motorcycle parts and the guy there told me he got out of that business because it is not cost effective for him to do it. Too much time, not enough return. He said there was another guy in our town who had been doing it, but he went out of business. Then I went to the Honda dealer and got the same info. So I brought it home, shined it up as best I could and applied some of the touch-up paint she had bought me when I got the bike. Looking at it today, it looks bad compared to how it used to look. But it used to look like a work of art. Now it looks like a motorcycle with some scratches and digs on it. Can I live with it knowing that I probably have similar moves in my future? Maybe. And maybe I need to. I am not a great motorcycle rider. My main talents are not getting in over my head with speed, recognizing potential road hazards and spotting potentially disengaged cagers in traffic. Survival skills. I don't think I will ever drag a knee or pop a wheelie, which are both too high up the risk ladder for my tastes at age 53. A stopped tip over because I didn't account for the fact that I wasn't tall enough to get my toes down on both sides of the bike? Um, yes. That seems exactly like something I would do. Also, pulling my bike into a space where I can't pull out. Also, dropping it while trying to put it on the center stand. Etc... The dumbass is strong in this one.

Shucks - that really is not good.

If money is tight, for now I would hold off fixing anything - just in case.

Photos will help us get a better feel for whether a bit of patient plastic welding will produce a decent repair. You should still be able to get hold of proper Honda Candy Glory paint, and if you are willing to dismantle and take the damaged parts to a local vehicle repair body-shop they may be able to do a very presentable repair and repaint. Just weigh up the costs against getting in new panels.

If you do have some funds to spend, then I would suggest you buy/fit some quality R&G frame sliders. They really can save you wallet, your pride and possibly your skin if you happen to have the bike fall and trap your leg - even stationary these bikes are plenty heavy enough to badly crush your leg - which can be prevented by fitting sliders.

Then make sure you free off the wing mirror pivot bolts and tighten them back up just enough to ensure they stay in place when riding but are loose enough to swing harmlessly out of the way if it tips over again, or you clip a car whilst filtering through traffic. Same trick with the levers - tight enough to stay in place, but loose enough to give a bit rather than break off.

Finally congratulations you are now eligible to join to august ranks on this thread ... :whoops:
