There's a '99 vfr available in my area, 43000 miles on it and it is all original. From the pictures I've seen it is in great shape and the asking price is $2800.

What issues should I be looking for on a '99, anything in particular to check that was a problem for this gen of vfrs?

    Thanks.

All vfr's are plagued with electrical gremlins. No recalls on that model year but you could ask if they've ever had to replace any electrical components and if the valve inspections were ever done. It's really pretty bulletproof, so it it looks good and you get a good vibe from the seller then go for it. Prices vary a little by region but that sounds about right for the year and mileage.

I just bought a 99 800 with 47000 miles and paid $3200 (but I'm in New Zealand). I've checked over the alternator and regulator wiring and it looks sweet. I had an issue with the speedo working intermittently, replaced the plastic coupling at the countershaft ($15 part and 5 minutes). The engine in mine sounds like it just came out of the factory. The suspension feels a bit clapped out but there are fixes for that; I'm pretty sure the rebound damping adjuster is seized in the shock. All I've done is fit some new tyres (Metzeler Z8's, just wonderful road tyres), oil and re-tension the chain, and replace the oil and filter. I have an air filter and spark-plug replacement scheduled. After that, I just plan to ride!

If your bike sounds and looks good, go for it. The fundamentals are sound and aside from the electrics, these bikes are basically bulletproof.

Whatever you do dont forcethe rebound adjuster. Dont ask how i know but they snap very easily.
I had a 5th gen prior to my new 6th gen and like has been said just make sure the rectifier/regulator is either working right or better yet has been upgraded. The only other problem i had on mine was some brittle plastics near the mounting points. Other than those two things i sold mine with around 43,000 running as strong as the day i bought it. Im counting on this 6th gen i bought to be as reliable as my 5th was. If so i will be very happy.
