Need help with removing passanger foot rests

So I began removing my rear passanger foot pegs and I realize that the rear shock damper controler twisty thing is attached to the right side rear peg assembly. How the heck due you seperate the two and then what the heck do you do with the shock controler once the pegs are completely off???

Once they're off, use shorter bolts to hold the controller in place.

I took the rear plastic off, moved the knob to a spot under the seat, and then put the plastic back on. It gives the sleekest look and it seems to be fine in there.
