The need and price ranges for the service if done by Honda or a skilled pro mechanic are going to differ almost reaching the level of opinions on , dare I say it, tires, oil and top end.

Does anyone have a source for shims if needed besides, as I understand it, having to buy a shitload of them from Honda many of which will never be needed?

I understand you almost have to take the motor oot of the frame to do shim swaps on these v-tecs, but I could be wrong. Also, next to none of these bikes come into the friendly honda dealer for major service; so, with that in mind, no matter how skilled sed :mech: is, he is gona be cursing you because he is gona lose money and not make the "book time-flat rate" Now if it was a more popular model and he/she was more versed on it, game is on. What I was saying above was not aboot ignoring a sound or a tick, but if the motor is running good, leave it alone.

About three weeks ago, the starter in my Jeep gave me two days of warnings, being the optimist, I chose to ignore it. Well, lucky for me I got to break down with my mother-in-law in toe (not to be confused with toe-cutter.) I bought a battery and installed it in the parking lot of the Indian restaraunt parking lot and still nothing! So, I crawled under my truck and cerimoniously starting banging on that starter with a big arse phillips head screwdriver (don't ask.) Got back in the Jeep turned the key and low and behold it started. That night I got a re-manned starter and installed it the next day.

Moral of the story? Don't ignore sounds that are oot of the ordinary. If somethings operating ok, leave it alone. Nuff-Sed, I would work on your v-tec for curried goat and mango lassies

So.... what exactly are the symptoms of valve clearances that are too tight? There are none... you will hear nothing and know nothing until it's too late.

The engine does not have to come out but you do disassemble pretty much the entire top end to get to the valves.

One of my clients is a motorcycle shop so thankfully all labor is free, and parts are at cost for me... and I get to learn along the way. :)

For the four valves that were off on my bike, They just ordered the right size "buckets" that were needed. VTec of course.

Wow Chicky Free Labor? You must bat your pretty VFR eyes at the Service Adviser or something. I too have a motorcycle shop client. I get the friends & family rate on parts and service but the few times I have ventured to have any "professional service" work done has been a shock to Wally Wallet. (Of course I am still living in 1980s shop rate land so that could have something to do with it.)

La Chica has more deals going with insurance fixes, cops , lawyers, movie moguls, cellphone outfits and now bike shops than anyone in the world.

More bragging aboot beating the system and not a word on where to get shims other than from Honda Inc.

Vegas and Reno historically have been the centers for "beating the system".. LOL

No, this is a motorcycle repair shop that works on all bikes, from Vintage Harleys from the early 1900s, all the way to some pretty crazy sport bikes. The owner can do whatever he wants since its his business. I took my bike to them long before they became a client, and when we were negotiating, I offered them a slightly lower rate, and they offered to do all work on my bike as I described above, His girlfriend is really cool and they are a solid couple, and no matter what the circumstances I don't bat my eyes at anyone to try to get any deals just because I'm female. Its all above board and its a win for everybody. :)

The only disadvantage to this is that if I NEED their labor, I'm last on the schedule... paying customers come first. But they always do their best to squeeze me in and get it done.

LOL! Nah... I just talk to them like they are my friends, admit what I did wrong, and... like everyone else, I win some and lose some. I had a stretch at one point where I had gotten a few tickets and I've toned it way down anyway... when I did get those tickets, thankfully I had a couple cop friends who took them to their judge friends and got them taken care of. Last year I became an MSF Rider Coach, so I can't get more than 3 points on my license or I lose my MSF certification... nowadays it's just easier to behave in the first place.

I have always found that honesty and friendliness are the best policies when performance awards are pending. My last bike ticket was years ago. I think it has something to do with my VFR having a very optimistic speedometer and me being something akin to poltry droppings in the speed department. I finally got to test my speedo with a GPS and it shows about 7 mph slow. (or is that fast?)

Honesty is the best policy on a dark and stormy night but everybody lies.

Said by one of those famous TV dudes who looks just like Norcalboy.

Good score on that box of shims. I wonder what Honda gets for the same thing? What is a mango lassie? Are they good to eat? Mangoes and oatmeal maybe? Please excuse the ethnic foodie humor. Are mango laddys those dudes who work the beaches in Miami and get to rub suntan stuff all over those Chicas down there?

I can sum this entire "beating oot traffic cigh-tay-tions" with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7kxTPbB4S4

As far as the drink thang, its right here https://www.google.com/search?q=man...AS1nIGACw&sqi=2&ved=0CEkQsAQ&biw=1332&bih=554

When I first moved down to beautiful South FL, I was living in a double wide (no-jokes as I set myself up here and its way too easy!) anyway, there was a neighbor Ann, who had a mango tree, she used to give them to me, and let me tell you something, they were the best gawd damn mangos you ever had! Natures sugar, beyond amazing. I got into eating Indian food when I was up in NJ, it is one of the things that I miss actually; China Town, parts of NYC etc. There are some decent Indian restaurants that don't de-tune the spice factour, so its good.

There is a word in German, it sounds like the safety company that makes car harnesses. Dienst is slave, Deist will save your life if you crash. So, with that new word in mind, the "diensts" rub the motion-lotion on sed chicas and other weirdos  down in South Beach. Actualyy, went down there over last weekend and it was a fun time.

I aint a thread high-jacker am I? Not a misgogynistic northerner-transplant/red-neck am I? Do these jeans make my arse look big? :flip:  Its all good in the hood  :pound:

Iggy sure makes sure the tittle is in there..

I looked at a bunch of those adult beverages. WTF happened to real drinks with those little umbrellas in them?

Those mangos are good. Here we make drinks out of pinecones.
