Hello, I recently got a VFR700 - the old owner told me I should clean the carbs - after taking the airbox off it turns out he wasn't lying. There was a rat/mouse nest in there (great) and thanks to the wonderful V configuration ratty was pissing directly into my carbs. Thanks to some of the corrosion that has happened in the bowl beneath the air filter, I can't get the 8 screws (with the retainers) out without seeming to strip the screws. I've blasted them with PB and still they won't budge - is there any trick to getting these out? I'd rather not buy a whole new carb - but if I did, would a VFR750 carb fit? I'm thinking maybe I'll have to dremmel the screws to fit a flat-head screwdriver but I'd rather not... Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Those screws need special care or heads will strip out. Gentle use of an impact driver, or hammering just a bit on the screw heads should help removal, loosens up corroded parts. Use quality tools. But it may NOT be necessary for you to seperate carb set from airbox just for a cleanup. Are throttle plates stuck ?

I think we had a case here awhile back where rodent piss totally destroyed a set of carbs. 750 carbs from '86 or '87 will work on your bike.

Great I'll tap down on them and see - the throttle plates appear to be ceased but the vacuum piston/diaphragm and other parts seem to be in relatively good condition and not deteriorated - the jets turned purple though... Was ceased throttle plates the you had to ditch that set of carbs? Thanks for your response

yep, never remove the carbs from that mounting plate! You can get a dainty pair of vise grips and have at the sides of the bowl screws if they are buggered up. Sometimes, this method is better than wacking on your stuff wit-a-hammer and assorted implements of destruction, thats just my "two-cents."

We need pictures of rodents nests nestled in your carbeeZ! :worthless:

With marginal philips head screws (I had some on my VF500 F just like yours) a dab of valve grinding compound into the screw head can keep the screwdriver from camming out. Also getting the Japaneese standard phillips head screwdriver might help since Japaneese phillips screws are somewhat different than US.

Set the carbs on each side for a few minutes and trickle your favorite lube down the throttle shafts, soaking for a few minutes and repeating as necessary. Try that first, along with whatever jets need cleaning.
