I started my 1984 vf700 with a battery too big to fit on the bike for testing. When I unhooked the battery the bike died. Is this normal? I' new to street bikes. I know cars will run without a battery assuming the alternater is good.

    thanks

Uhhh. Battery is needed to complete the circuit. Only bikes with a magneto ignition don't need a battery like dirt bikes

Owners/service manual specifically states NOT to disconnect battery while running or electrical system damage will occur.

LIke tinki sez, modern bikes are not like your dad's old chevy, and a battery needs to be connected anytime the bike is running or electrickal damage is likely.
