Hey guys, sorry im fairly y new to this... anyways i have a 1991 VFR 750 and here is my story

i was riding along one day when right before i came to a stop sign my bike died, completely dead, i was able to get a jump and ride home. I then bought a new battery thinking it could of been faulty and took it out for a ride, all seemed well the first 45 min of the ride when my bike died out while i was going around 65 mph, unsure i pulled into the emergency lane and slowed down to were i tried to pop the clutch. nothing, bike was completely dead again. This time when i got a jump i was able to go for a mile before it died completely again. Almost as if i was running off of the jump charge and that charge wouldnt hold which brings me to think it could be the stator?
i did a couple of tests with the multimeter and the volts jump up when i rev to 3 - 5 rpms so im thinking the reg is fine. but like i said im fairly new to this so research is all i really have

here is a pic of my stator, doesnt look too bad, the connection looks lightly burnt but im unsure

thanks for any help guys =)

The RR, the stator and the harness are the cause of your symptom. Good luck getting her fix

Take a good look at the wires going to the top of the starter relay too ! If they look melted, the bike won't charge proppaly even with good reg and stator.

alrighty, so i put the new stator in and the charge is now holding, it seems though that my RR is actually out as well, i tried a voltage test on it and it would not rise above 12 when i rev it up all the way from 5 - 9, there was probably a .20 diff but the number itself would not rise, i ordered a RR today. i cant believe my RR AND Stator both were out 0.o

You may have only needed an R/R and the stator could have been good. Its better to diagnostic tests first before spending money on parts.

btw - I hope you didnt order an OEM R/R....

Charge the battery and get it load tested too....

The stator is likely okay, but you can see in the picture where the spade terminal lug was arcing and started to melt the plastic connector housing. Once that connection opens up due to the heat and the arcing it can take out the RR as the AC is looking for a return path--if it can't find it, it will make one...Might want to solder the terminals and eliminate the spade lugs especially in the AC lines.

^ high five on that one, soldered connections are the only way to fly from the stator to the plug, simply cut, solder, and shrink tube it!

I thought your stator looked a little crispy, since we don't have "smell-ah-vision-computers." Duz it smell burnt?

haha no, i ended up getting an aftermarket one, the OEM one had a solid bottom, im guessing thats how it burnt out so quick. This aftermarket one i have is vented from the bottom

So all is well with the stator and R/R if anyone else is having similar symptoms, i would def put my money on the R/R as the primary problem though. now that i have fixed those problems, i now need to have my carburetor serviced -_- ahh the joy of a old bike xD

Well I'll add to that, I hope you didnt go cheap too. Buy quality parts and you dont have to screw with charging fixes for a long time.

The VFRW link (post #2) above gives the best info on the site on viffer charging diagnostics and fixes.

---------Ignore it at your own peril.

I doubt this is the right place to post this, but I tried to search but have had no luck. My 92 isn't charging. The connections to the R/R and the Stator look good. But the Connector to the starter switch is melted.Would that in itself cause my charging issues?

That because the R/R is getting bad and cause the Stator wire to melted.
Check the link on #2 post. Test the R/R first.
