Hopped on the bike to head to the store about 2 miles away. While sitting at the light, the engine just died and the headlights went off. Marker lights, tail like, signals, etc all work, dash lights up, starter will turn over. FI light is on but doesn't prime when I hit the kill switch. So no headlights, no pump. Just finished pushing it all the way home. Would love to have an idea of what to even look for.

Was running fine since I got it in Dec. All I have changed is took the tailpipe off and ran an open pipe. Today I added some baffling material on the inside of the oval tip I have on. Could that have done something?

I wonder if the headlight is not related and is only a sticking starter button?

Numerous 5th gens have had a problem with the ground buss connections.

You didn't bump the kill button?

Just found it. THe main 30amp fuse was melted a bit. Wonder what would cause that? Anyone got a clue on that? Put a new 30 in and the lights came on and she fired up. Just don't want a repeat of this.

I did not expect the main fuse as the dash lights and others were working - assuming I read that right.

Time to check the stator connections and the RR connection. All prone to failure.

My 07 did that a while back and it was the 30 amp fuse. The fuse holder was discolored and the fuse was all melted and bubbled up. I replaced it and it fired right up. Last month it did it again....this time the fuse was just blown but not melted. I popped another fuse in and so far it's been fine, but I really need to find some time to figure out what's causing it. I was thinking that the 07's didn't have the stator/RR problems like the earlier ones did though???

Typically they didn't, but sounds like the symptoms are there.

Ris & 1stCav, check this link. Specifically post #9.

Sadly it does still happen - I had both the RR & stator go south on my 2006 - which has basically the same electrical gear fitted to later 800s. So if you start experiencing any strange electrical gremlins its probably worth "doing the drill".

OK my bike had done a lot of miles, but the failure of mine seemed to be coincide with the bike getting really hot on a hot day, at which point the insulation in the stator windings started to fail. When I pulled the cover it revealed a charred mess with a strong smell of melted electrical windings.

    IMG_4165.jpg

Despite the oil seal, about an egg cup of engine oil dripped out, which I guess may have contributed to the failure. The resulting electrical spike killed at least one of the diodes in the RR and promptly blew both headlight bulbs before the main fuse gave up. If your main fuse is tripping - something is wrong, and if you just leave it, the chances are the eventual damage/cost will grow.

    Take care

^ yep agreed, if we had smell-oh-vision, we would smell burnt oot electronics on the above picture. The culprits are three things, your connection to your r/r-the r/r itself possibly and your stator/stator wires. If I were you, I would at least check the oot put of the stator, (lots of posts on how to do this-you do have the official honda repair manual?) Sounds like your starter relay could be screwed too, I had a problem with mine where it burnt the spades and melted the plug. Ditch that r/r and get one that starts with the letters FH as its a Mosfet technology. and look into one of those vfr harness things, - Don't have any experience with them but from what I have read, they have helped oot numerous peoples. If one of those three yellow wires touch each other your stator is toast, it happens in the plug usually, I hard solder those connections. Good luck and keep us posted.
