What the hell could I have done? Gas in oil sump

I bought this bike (VF1000) back in December, and have been working on it sporadically. It has never run for me.

8 weeks ago, or so, I changed the oil and did a few things. As the bike started for the first time, oil came out of the housing. The filter that I had bought and installed did not seat properly. I shut the bike down, and quickly put the old filter back on. After getting the old filter back on and topping the oil level off, the bike would no longer start.

Fast forward 4 weeks. I give it another shot, but the bike still won't start. It appears that it isn't getting gas. I replace the fuel pump with an Delco fuel pump recommended in another thread on this page. Still nothing.

Fast forward to yesterday. I move the bike from the storage unit when it has been to my house since I bought it. I noticed that it was leaking oil from the oil filter. It would not hand tighten, so I figured that I had gotten a piece of oil dry on the seal when I reinstalled the old filter.

This morning, I bought a new filter, and went to change the oil so I could get the new filter on. When I took the oil plug off, a gas/oil mixture came out to the sump. More gas than oil.

What the hell did I do wrong? And how bad is it? I am sure that I have tried to start the bike with this much oil in the sump, but it never started.

I'm not a gear head, but I really can't come up with a failure mode that would account for this. Any ideas?

What exact fuel pump did you use? Could have blasted the float valves off their seat if the psi is too high

Yeah, hopefully it was not anything bigger than 3psi.

This is why your always supposed to check the oil level before cranking the bike. If it ever appears over filled, gas might have drained into it.
