Picked up my VFR over Thanksgiving break a couple months ago it was too good of a deal to pass up even though I already had 2 bikes. The bike came with a micron high mount slip-on and a db windscreen as well as a sargeant seat and only has 7300 miles!!!! I'm a soldier currently stationed in Fort Bragg NC and travel back home to NJ regularly and hope to make the trip on the VFR to keep some miles off my truck. I know there are a few things that i need to replace before i start doing 550 mile trips each way that's why i joined this forum so i can learn what i have to do. I'm thinking to start a VFRness as well as an 04-06 R1 R/R. Any tips input even questions about the bike let me know that's why i joined seems to be a lot of good info on here.

Welcome to the WORLD Rider99. Looks like you scored a great looking example of the world's greatest sport touring machine. Not that we here are at all biased Nooooo, definitely not that.

Never hurts to check the charging system on the VFR's as they have been known to be, well, somewhat problematic. If you still have a factory one you could always ride around with a replacement under the seat. Personally my preference would be to replace the R/R with a more stout unit like the one you suggested. Other than that, just get on and ride.

Have be fun, ride safe, and keep her shiny side up. And above all else ENJOY the the bike, cause we all know you WILL. :)

Welcome to our little corner of the web! Really nice example you scored there. If I were planning 500 mile runs I would invest in some Helibars asap. It looks like yo have a nice seat already and you're piped so other than that, toss on the soft luggage a ride. They look nice all set up for a trip!

Congrats and welcome to site. Where you from in NJ?

Thanks for your service - my nephew is currently serving in Ft. Bragg after spending the last 12 months in N. Korea.

You know, Jethro, as I typed that, I started asking myself was it North or South? Could of sworn it was North, since there was concern within the family about him being there, but its possible I am mistaken. He's been home (i.e Ft. Bragg) since about Christmas though, so my old guy memory has faded.

Probably the South as the only Americans that get into the North are NBA players. :potstir:

Thanks for all the responses. I already do have a set of soft bags that my uncle gave me from his old ZRX1100 he had before he upgraded to a goldwing last year so I'm all set there. I definitely am really excited to start putting some miles on this bike and I do think a little bit higher bars will help for the trip I didn't even think about that. I'm located in Central Jersey right next to Toms River and usually ride out west towards PA because I try and stay away from all the cars and highway's but I'm hoping the VFR is a little better than a crotch rocket on the Interstate. Does anyone have any suggestions for a R/R I saw that there are newer ones out now than the one from the R1 but cant find a good plug and play I'm not very good with electrical and would really like to keep it simple.

You can take a look at this thread. There are various suggestions on brands or places to order.

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/39277-How-to-fix-common-regulator-Stator-failures

I'm no good with electrical or mechanical for that matter, but I took the time to read on this site, ask questions, and tackle the problem. It took me a while, but in the end it was well worth it. So even if you spend 4 hours doing a 2 hour job (like I did!), its time well spent.

Considering how terrible the stock electrical and R/R are on these bikes, you definitely want to make a change. Otherwise, it'll be almost inevitable you'll be left stranded at some point during that 500 mile commute.
